Unfortunately the incoming guy is no better.

We've had twelve years of poor leadership. Recently the city council was debating passing a law that the speed limit in the city is 30mph. What good is that if you don't enforce it?

Poor Bloomberg has no legacy and can't point to anything where he made the city a better place.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I wouldn't say that is completely true. I think the indoor smoking ban at restaurants and bars was a good a thing.

^^NYC already had a smoking ban in restaurants before Bloomberg.

I disagree with the ban on bar smoking. It's annoying to have to walk past a bar where there is a horde of smokers standing on the street. It has created more litter on the street and more crowding on streets that are already crowded.

Smoking belongs in bars.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

The only poeple who think that are smokers.

I hardly think there are hordes of smokers on the streets in front of bars. There may be two or three but you'll encounter that many smokers and more just walking down the street.

I believe that and I'm not a smoker. Drinking and smoking go together.

I think that bars should be able to decide whether they want indoor smoking or not. I've always thought it a tad hypocritical that the city allows cigar clubs but not smoking bars.

This has always been the case. It's just that it became more apparent under Bloomberg's administration. And it's only going to get worse under de Blasio.

The smoking ban has made going out in NYC a lot more pleasant and I think bar owners have only benefited from it. Smokers will go out whether they can smoke inside or not, but now people who at one time wouldn't go out because they couldn't stand being in smokey bars go out as well.

When I lived in NYC, I couldn't go out to bars with friends because I couldn't breathe. After the ban kicked in, I could go with my friends to get a drink after a show or a press event. Why? I have severe allergy problems. Cigarette smoke means I have to leave the room. My throat and nasal passages start to close up. I have wound up in an ambulance before because of cigarette smoke.

So, please, continue to tell me how letting people enter a building without risking an encounter with cigarette smoke in a closed off space is a bad, terrible, not very good thing.

I do not like Bloomberg. I do not like most of his policies. The smoking ban is the only exception I can think of.

New Jersey also has a ban on smoking in restaurants and bars, so Bloomberg isn't the only one to do that. In comparison, I went to college in Pennsylvania and they did not have that law. My eyes were burning by the end of the night. It was not pleasant at all. But, I guess to Goth my well being doesn't matter when I go out to drink.

I'm in no way a Bloomberg supporter but I consider the smoking ban a good thing as do a lot of people so I will give him credit for that. It is the one good thing that came out of his administration. Other than that, I think Bloomberg is completely out of touch with the hardships of the poor and working class.

I imagine Goth never actually goes out or finds himself in bars, where the scum of the earth apparently sit and drink and smoke until they can't see straight.

If Goth ever frequented a bar or two, he might understand that it's a reasonable expectation for me to not have to endure secondhand smoke while in an establishment to enjoy my meal or drink.

I think it's a reasonable expectation to encounter smoking in a bar. Smoking and drinking go together.

Do you also assume a reasonable expectation of people not smoking in their own apartments?

I don't smoke and I don't like cigarette smoke. But I also understand that if I want people to accommodate things for me, then I have to make reasonable accommodations for others. And I think smoking in a bar is a reasonable accommodation.

If drinking and smoking go together, I guess it makes sense that only 4 or 5 people at my class reunion ever went outside to smoke. Everyone else was sitting inside and plotting on how to smoke inside with their drinks.

Domestic violence also goes hand-in-hand with drinking. Should we allow that in bars too?
As someone who (formerly)smoked for a really long time, I can say that coffee and cigarettes go together far more than drinking and cigarettes. Does that mean you think smoking should be allowed wherever they serve coffee, Goth?
It's a ridiculous argument that ignores the harm it does to others.

It goes like this: I don't drink soda, therefore I think there should be a ban on soda.

When did all of this extremist thinking enter into society? It's very dangerous. It's what *I* want and forget the rest of society.

You drinking soda doesn't directly impact me. You smoking in the same establishment I am eating/drinking in does, as I am on the receiving end of your secondhand smoke. That is a major public health issue.

But that's not the argument Bloomberg used to try to ban it. He said that soda causes people to be fat, thereby raising everyone's healthcare rate. So yes it does impact you.

That's your expectation, perhaps, but I don't agree that it's a general one. Until it was banned, there was a reasonable expectation that people would smoke on flights, between courses at dinner, and at the movies.

You have to be careful of things like living wage laws because they create an artifical economy.

First, if every company must pay a living wage, then there will be no check in place to separate the horrible employers from the good employers. If a company only wants to pay minimum wage, then employees should have that knowledge and be able to say I'd rather work for an employer who is willing to pay more.

Second, living wage decreases the earning potential of skilled employees. Your experience and education mean nothing if you can't leverage them for a higher salary.

Third, living wage forces prices to increase. We see this with companies who have union workers. If a company is forced to hire a certain amount of people at a certain price, the company will pass that expense on to the consumer.
