Posted: 3/4/06 at 7:33pmI'm almost 19. If I had been that much of a dumb kid at 12 and did what he did, I think I'd still be living at home with no TV, phone, and computer.

Posted: 3/4/06 at 7:40pmi'm glad this kind of thing doesn't happen more often. many times when i'm in a museum or gallery, i have the sick vision of someone coming in with a can of spray paint or a utility knife and going berserk. the guards would only be able to stop the loony after major damage had been done. (ok, this shows what kind of mind i have.)

When I was younger I was always taught that it was REALLY bad to put your gum anywhere but in the garbage after you were done. Whenever I saw someone put their gum under a table or something I would always be shocked.
I guess I grew up very sheltered though.

"I can testify to this "12 year old is not an excuse thing". I'm 13, and I would have NEVER EVER even think about doing something that stupid and immature."
I'm 13, too. I've known not to do that since I started taking field trips, in kindergarten.

Becky: "Gum chewing is rude on its own"
Are you being serious?
I could not live without chewing gum. I mean, I don't chew it in inappropriate places but I still chew it.

you should be proud Detroit has a museum as fine as the DIA among its many cultural attractions
but you're probably a suburbanite who never goes into the city, right?

"If he's 12 years old and thinks that is appropriate behavior, they probably aren't doing the best job raising him in the first place."
Think about it. Are ANY parents raising their kids to be anything other than the brainless trash that popular culture dictates them to be?
"Yet another reason for me NOT to feel proad to live near Detroit."
It's not Detroit. It's America, period.

This version of the story made me even more p*ssed off about this:
http://makeashorterlink.com/?S15021EBC
as not only was there the whole "he's only 12" excuse from the woman who runs the school he attends (which makes me wonder- for those in the area who would know, is this like one of those new age, touchy feely, we don't believe in grades or punishing kids 'cause it'll hurt their self-esteem, kinda schools? Cause I really do wonder about the 'supervision' that the kids on this field trip had), but the REPORTER of the story actually uses the phrase "boys will be boys." Kid you not- second to last paragraph.
Granted, I was never a boy, but I think I just became insulted on behalf of all boys.
It hasn't been that long since I was 12 myself, but man I feel like I'm my grandma sometimes: "why back in my day, we knew that museums were for looking with your eyes, not with your fingers..."

That 12 year old is officially my hero! I can't even begin to count the number of times I've wanted to destroy something everyone else thought to be so great and just laugh in their faces. I'm some what of a sadist...
burlesque.......are you on medication, or just an idiot. Your post isn't even fitting for a 12yr old.....
and Yawper...you are right the DIA is amazing.....I miss visiting it

"He said he liked rap, so I said, 'Well, you know what rock 'n' roll is,' and he did, so I said, 'Can you imagine if somebody had messed up the beat in rock and roll so you didn't have any rhythm in rap.' And he looked at me, and he got it immediately."
Um, even I don't get that. What the hell is she talking about? All he needs to understand is that destroying someone else's work is wrong, he doesn't need a lecture in preserving history.
The school refuses to say how long the suspension is for. Probably because it's only one day and they don't want to deal with the backlash from people objecting to their half-assed punishment.

Anakela--
That article was written with the typical attitude that seems to accompany a lot of parenting these days. "Oh well....kids are kids....and oops he made a mistake...it's cute".
That child should not only have to pay for the repairs...I think he should have to be at the museum for EVERY step of the repair process. Then maybe he'd see how his two seconds of stupidity created HOURS of work for other people.

excellent point, wendy. It's not just money, it's time/inconvenience, too.
I'm sure he has a fan club too among his little cretin croonies in his class.

Holly Academy is a charter school with traditional curriculum and grading. Its students score above average on state assessment tests.
I admit I find it somewhat depressing that this story has garnered so much attention when there are far worse situations involving 12 year olds in this country.

Posted: 3/4/06 at 9:48pmperhaps yawper that's because in this country everything is disposable.......even art. If we, as children, were taught respect for art, architecture, etc....this probably would not have happened.
#40re: Boy sticks gum on a painting
Posted: 3/4/06 at 9:55pmNo, I just think that story is funny and a little out of the conventional ways I loathe...I'm just weird like that I guess.

true yawper....so true
burlesque, I just get a bit huffy when art is dis-respected....didn't mean to come off like I did
#43re: Boy sticks gum on a painting
Posted: 3/4/06 at 10:10pmUnfortunately, when people talk during concerts, talk on the phone during movies, eat sandwiches during Broadway shows, we shouldn't be surprised that a kid sticks his gum on a painting.

It blows my mind that any child, let alone a 12-year-old, would do such a thing in such a seemingly nonchalant manner. Regardless of whether he fully (to quote his teacher) "understood the ramifications of his actions", he without a doubt knew that what he did was highly inexcusable. How could he not? It's ludicrous to say that any human that has lived on this earth for 12 years would not have any inkling that sticking chewing gum on a work of art is wrong.

Yawper- sure, there's bigger and better crimes out there:
12 year old held in carjacking:

12 year old takes gun to school:

12 year old charged in arson death of his cousin:

12 year old charged with 'inappropriate touching'
http://cbs2chicago.com/topstories/local_story_059142730.html
etc., etc., etc.
Doesn't mean that I can't still be fascinated by a 12 year old who thinks it's a-ok to put chewed gum on a piece of art, and the leader of his school who defends his allegedly just not knowing any better.
