I see your point, Rathnait, but I don't think the issues are comparable. Children shouldn't have to wait to be adopted because the adoption laws are unfair, and I would want the kind of principled people who object to those laws to be the ones who *are* adopting, rather than those who don't.
My point is, how does the state decide that someone who has known those kids for five minutes is eligible to adopt them? But gay couples who have been together 30 years can't get married?
The gays are adults. The kids are too young to have a say - what if Brad and Angie aren't together next month? They're forever tied through those kids. They may break up and she could find the man to marry and stay with forever within a year or less - and those kids will have to deal with joint custody forever, instead of Brad having been their mom's boyfriend from before Zahara would even have much memory. I was concerned about those kids from the minute the adoption went through so quickly and easily. Not only are they not married, they haven't been together very long.
What if she does find that next guy - and they're married for life? Wouldn't it have been great if he could have adopted the kids? I'm just astonished that this was allowed. It's not like she has a history of committing to men.

Ahh, I'm up to speed now. This isn't an issue here in the UK, and if the US side of things is being played out here, I've managed to miss it. Although, now this little Bradism has appeared, it probably will, in the magazines anyway.

Well, it isn't Pitt's fault, Rath.

I meant the law.
Maybe it would be better for the kids...who knows?

I wouldn't mind it if they decided to adopt me! Hello hot Mommy and Daddy!
"I'm trying to get over the hypocrisy of the fact that an unmarried couple (who'd been together how long when the adoption went through, by the way?) was able to separately adopt two children, and yet they're all up on the We Won't Marry Until Gays Can Marry! bandwagon."
Correct me if I am wrong, but both Maddox and Zahara were adopted by Angelina Jolie alone. It was only recently that they wanted to have Brad officially adopt the kids...but as of now I believe no official press statement has been made regarding whether or not Brad has legally adopted Maddox and Zahara. They just happened to change their last names from "Jolie" to "Jolie-Pitt".
Another reason to love Brad!
As soon as the law is changed he'll marry Tom Cruise...
Or Billy Bob Thornton...
Marelene, I believe the adoption was made legal back in December. I'll get back to you on that...

It's good and all if you want to stand up for marriage rights of others, but how does he explain his brand new stance on this issue since he was already married before! I don't remember him standing up for marriage rights then.
My thoughts exactly...
Like I said, Erika. People change.

StageManager2: Not an issue. The gesture is moot, since he has already participated in the institution of marriage.
Oh, sorry. I thought you guys were putting emphasis on the last sentence.

Perhaps jsrocks was, but for me, the issue is more that this is a completely pointless gesture, since he's already been married. And of course, it's just my opinion. :-P
Well, I don't care about his motives, but any supportive voice to gay rights, especially from high profiled people, is very welcome, in my book. Bravo, Brad !
the point is absolutely not moot. he has obviously come to believe that a stance needs to be made. by this logic of yours, my boycotting walmart for their practices is moot because I used to shop there. bs. if anything, it's more poignant as it shows that brad believes in marriage.
bravo to brad and angelina! and to charlize and stuart and anyone else who is standing up for equality.
on a side note, while the uk is definitely on the right track, they still have a step to go--separate is not equal and there will come a time when gays getting 'civil unions' and straights getting 'marriage' will be an issue.
Call me pessimistic, but the way things are looking, they won't be married for a loooooooong time, unless all the red states go into a coma or something.
Even though the ban was never passed, I predict a while before it's legal for all to marry.

Well, we can't just let Brad and Angelina continue to live in sin. Better just let those damn homos marry so those poor innocent children aren't damned to the fires of hell.

I'm suspicious of his motives. I mean, nobody is going to change their stance on same-sex marriage because of what Brad and Angelina do. This isn't going to affect legislation.
If he wanted to get across the fact that he supports the right of gay people to marry, then say that. Don't hijack an issue for self-aggrandizement.
It's shameless grandstanding.

I don't agree. He has always been interested in social issues and now that he has Angelina, he is more vocal. He has been involved in helping out in New Orleans. Bravo, Brad!
it makes a huge statement and will definitely cause massive amounts of dialogue among those who give a crap in the media and around people's watercoolers. and that's part of the progress. tiny steps, but moving forward. change will come from grassroots education and economics. it will also come with pop culture as silly as that may sound. but look at history and tell me i'm wrong.
but I guess some of you know brad enough to know his motivations. so your cynicism is merited as you and brad are bff and you can speak for him.
and, otherwise, I will never comprehend the level of negativity on this board. some of you wallow in it.
