I'm kind of surprised no one has posted about this yet.
I think it's sad what happened, but this mother must be out of her ever loving mind. She keeps saying "As long as her heart is still beating, she's alive", but the only reason her heart is still beating is because she's on life support.
And I think the Uncle is a scummy opportunist...

I've been listening to a discussion of this on radio. it seems the parents are past the point of expecting a miracle to happen and now they are focusing on the law suit.
supposedly, the child had sleep apnea and the surgery to remove her tonsils was to relieve the apnea. After the surgery, she had a popsicle, but then in the intensive care unit, she had severe bleeding and died.

If they are not expecting a miracle to happen, then why are they keeping her on life support?
They need to let her go.

Posted: 1/6/14 at 7:18pmThey want to wrack up more medical expenses for the lawsuit. They're twisted.
#7Brain-dead girl Jahi McMath released from California hospital
Posted: 1/6/14 at 7:19pmThey're probably leaving her on support while the law suit is formulated. I understand the hospital is not charging for the care.

Posted: 1/6/14 at 7:50pmThe hospital's not charging, but I'm sure they can come up with a figure for the daily care of the child. This family also has multiple paypal donations set up and is selling t-shirts with their daughter's image on it. It's a morbid mix of tragedy and exploitation and the whole family has gone off the deep end.

Posted: 1/6/14 at 7:55pmYes, the hospital is doing this for free. I understand the family could win up to 20 mil if they prove there was wrongdoing.

And why would anyone be liable for her daily care, other than the family?
She died and they are the ones keeping her on life support. It was a tragic accident, but people can die from complications of surgery.

"Terry SChiavo case anyone"
Sorry, but no. Terry was in a vegetated comma state. It's completely different. But it hasn't stopped the freaks who started the Terry Schiavo Foundation in her name. They have attached themselves to this as well.
I think they, and the Uncle, are just looking for publicity.
The Uncles Facebook page makes no mention of Jahi until after she passed away. But, it's filled with shirtless pics of him!

Posted: 1/6/14 at 10:18pmWhen I was a child we had a housekeeper whose teenage child was seriously injured in a car accident. He was declared brain dead but the family kept him alive in a nursing home (at government expense) for several years before he finally died. Some people believe what they want to believe and are given to false hope for recovery. Can you blame them? I don't know. If it were me in that situation I would want my family to pull the plug and let me have a dignified death but different strokes for different folks.

I think when you have a child the idea of "turning off" whatever is keeping them breathing is beyond comprehension. I am not sure they just want publicity. It's very possible that they are just out of their minds with grief. I suppose the lawsuit adds another element, but heaven knows that's probably fueled by the people who have grabbed hold of this.
Bless the kid's heart. She was 13 and severely obese. That's probably the reason for the apnea. That could be another element. If her weight was a contributing factor, the parents are probably trying to do anything they can rather than reflect on the fact that they had a big part to play in her illness.

Posted: 1/7/14 at 7:16amI just read in an article (that I will have to dig up), that the surgery she had was much more involved than a tonsillectomy. In addition to having her tonsils removed, I believe she had an adenoidectomy and her uvula reshaped. No surgery is routine, but this was even more involved than much of the media is making it out to be. The LA Times has good, unbiased coverage on the case, if people are looking for more information.

Posted: 1/7/14 at 8:35amThis is a tragic case all around. But let's be clear about something. The hospital that is maintaining the girl on life support isn't doing it for free: they may not be charging the parents but the cost of care is being borne somewhere - either by the hospital (in which case the overhead for all patients goes up) or by the government. Based on my knowledge of hospital charges, Jahi is being supported by equipment and staff at about $2300 a day. Minimum.

$2300 seems exceedingly low, even.
This is the blog I read yesterday that I thought presented a good outline of the case (and also is where I read that I should check out the LA Times for coverage.

My immediate family is very open and communicative about wishes for end of life care and advance health directives. After an incident with another family member in 2013, I've become even more interested in issues surrounding someone's right to a death with dignity.

Posted: 1/7/14 at 10:43amJane - see my comment above. I believe the family has collected donations to pay for the physical transfer since no insurance will cover the medical escort for the moving of a person declared deceased (I have seen the cost estimated at $31,000 for medivac from West Coast to East Coast), but I do not know who is paying for her care at the destination.

It's going to be a huge bill, and the tax payers are going to eat it, I'm sure.

Posted: 1/7/14 at 12:06pmI would like to see a reputable medical facility try to bill the government for care of someone for whom a death certificate has been issued.
#23Brain-dead girl Jahi McMath released from California hospital
Posted: 1/7/14 at 12:40pmI don't understand this family's reasoning at all. Do they expect this poor little girl to be the same if she ever comes out of this? If they do they are in for a rude awakening. They need to let this girl go. Let her rest in peace.

Posted: 1/7/14 at 1:02pmIn Sweden, if you are brain dead, you are dead. There is no option of continuing on a respirator. When when brain death is declared, the only instance of life support is in the case of organ donation. I know many would scream about RIGHT TO LIFE and death panels, but it seems like removing any possible emotion from the decision is a better situation.
