while it does put a personal face on a party policy, it also legitimately opens the challenger up to charges that he is using the sexual preference of the vp's daughter to try to insulate himself from the charges that he's too cozy with the fringe elements of his party. in a way it could be construed and will be construed in some backwater places, places where kerry might be seen as "too liberal," as "oh yeah, well cheney's daughter is gay ." whether that's how he meant it or not (and i didn't mean it like that) the fact is that it will be taken that way.
while the sentiment for bringing it up is different, the effect in certain parts of the country will be the same as a republican making a coded racial comment in a deep south election and that's not something that's unexpected or even unappreciated by the democratic candidate. i don't think he was trying to necessarily score points with my toothless compadres, but he had to know that he might. that i think taints the use of it.
she's out and proud. in a more enlightened election cycle, it would not be an issue. the fact that it is speaks more to the level to which the campaigns have both sunk than to anything else. but think for a moment, if a republican had pointedly mentioned in a debate the sexuality of a member of their opponent's family. regardless of the rationale. can anyone here honestly say that they would not be now up in arms over such a reference? now say it with a straight face.

Mary Cheney may be out but she is NOT proud.
She's a selfish opportunist who kept her mouth shut for 4 years while her mother and father kept her and her girlfriend on the sideline. It was only during this reelection campaign, after Bush had pandered to the Religious Right, that they Cheneys decided to share Mary's "private" life to help appeal to moderate Republicans. Well, once you make something public, it's public.
Where was Lynne Cheney's indignation when the RNC sent out those anti-gay flyers? Where was Dick Cheney's response when Rodney's favorite Republican Alan Keyes was asked if Mary Cheney's lesbianism made her "a selfish hedonist" and Keyes replied, "Of course she is. That goes by definition"? I was indignant when those events occurred but Mary Cheney kept her well-paid mouth SHUT. Now they're all indignant because of COMPLIMENTS Kerry and Edwards paid? Oh, Mary, please!
Kerry's and Edwards's use of Mary's publicly discussed orientation was not "tainted." It was not "outing." The only thing that makes it noteworthy is the blatant gay-bashing Mary Cheney and her mother and father allow the Republican Party to engage in.

PalJoey, you're my new role model. This thread is one of the most stirring at this board in a while.
To add to the raised voices (notice I avoided the word "screaming") ... doesn't anyone think it ridiculous that Little Mary is so .. so TONGUE TIED (a liability for a lesbian, to be sure..) I mean, why doesn't she speak up?
Her parents treat her like Laura Wingfield, sitting home with her leg brace, playing with her glass unicorn. Or in this case, what? A glass ... clam? Blow out the candles, Mary, and say something! You're old enough to speak for yourself. If you're exploited -- by journalists, daddy or that "not nice man" (per Mama Lynn) Kerry, speak now or forever hold dear your piece of the closet. Did she even ever address those Log Cabin fellas? Wouldn't THAT have been an interesting scene?

no one outed mary--she outed herself years ago when she took a job with coors as liaison to the glbt community.
who made it public?

"Rodney's favorite Republican Alan Keyes"
that is just, plain, slanderous.
PalJoey, don't misrepresent my views. Disagree with me all you want, but do not lie about them.
please see this post for my posistion on the Alan Keyes thing.

Thank you, WCA. Thank you, Auggie. Please don't make me a role model--remember what happened to Bob and Rod!
I LOVE the idea of Mary Cheney as Laura--but I love even more the idea of Lynne Cheney as Amanda! "Go to the moooooooon, you selfish dreamer!"
Rodney--your acknowledged support for Alan Keyes speaks for itself. As a matter of fact, it speaks VOLUMES.
And, Papa--I believe Mary first made it public back in 1999, when she toured on behalf of Coors beer, with Bruce Chopnik...INTERNATIONAL MR. LEATHER for 1999.

And Dick Cheney stated the following at a rally in Davenport, Iowa in August:
"Lynne and I have a gay daughter, so it's an issue our family is very familiar with."
This was hardly confidential info.

Posted: 10/14/04 at 4:22pmAs with any and all politicians, especially those running for office or trying to be re-elected, anything that will get a response and their name in the news is fair game. Mrs Cheney isn't truly indignant, not for a moment. It just helps their cause. Someone told her to provide a sound bite. And no doubt they also told her what to say.

She used the word "tawdry" on purpose. It is a clear signal to the religious right that calling someone homosexual is horrendous. It's brilliant politics. She smacks Kerry for his statement so score one for Lynne. And she says to the evangelicals "being gay is gross" without actually saying it. Two points Lynne.
But the backlash will be to rally the base for Kerry.

Having read the entire thread up to this point, I find it interesting that no one has made what seems to me to be an obvious point.
Lesbian...seems to be the dirty word here. Not the fact that Kerry brought up the vice president's daughter in an answer to a question about gay marriage.
If the question had been about education...and Kerry said Vice President Cheney's daughter was a school teacher...would there have been the upset? Or if it had been about Health Care...and Kerry said Vice President Cheney's daughter was a Doctor, would we see this kind of outrage?? Although these are hypothetical questions, since she is neither a school teacher or doctor, I think the answer would be no.
It's HOMOPHOBIA...period. No one of course, is going to say that...not the Cheney's...not the commentators or the spin doctors.
It was simple a statement of fact. She is a LESBIAN. It wasn't an insult or a slur. Just a fact, Lynne Cheney spoke volumes with her response. Maybe mother isn't quite as proud of her daughter as she'd like us to believe. Perhaps a little soul searching is in order for those who profess to say they are not homophobic...but are outraged when the "love that dare not speak it's name" is attributed to one of their own.

Posted: 10/14/04 at 4:43pmI think reminding conservative voters that one of the family members of the guys on the ticket happens to be gay was appropriate in the response to a gay marriage question. That said, I personally thought it seemed to push the envelope for Kerry to put words in Mary's mouth. A simple reminder of the fact that even big republican families have gay members would have been enough.

Yes, I agree with you to a certain extent, BT. While Kerry's attitudes toward homosexuality are OPEN, they are not particularly educated. His bringing up the married men who leave their wives for other men was an odd example to cite when making the point that homsexuality is something you're born with. But, clearly, he knows some men who have been in that situation.
The point is that those were HIS OWN thoughts, awkward and ham-handed though they might have been expressed--and they were as good as or better than we've ever had from a president or a presidential candidate.
And compared to the mealy-mouthed pandering to bigots coming from the other side, I was cheered by what I heard.
I don't care that he doesn't support the word "marriage"--I'm not sure how important that word is that to me anyway--I care that he's thought through the issue and decided that my partner and I are entitled to EVERY SINGLE RIGHT a heterosexual couple has.
