Broadwaygirl..So, what you're saying is...because I think Ms. Spears isn't that bright, I could never have a career like hers? I'm 20 now and Im working my own bottom off like many others on this board to get an acting job..I don't think we feel the need to bare all to put ourselves on a plate. I admit I do like her style but, she also ruined me for a year or so...I always compared myself to her.. "I will never look like her" and I still feel that way sometimes.. I even had a pathetic away message up yesterday that said "GOAL: I will have Britney abs by summer"... so, maybe she does have some at the palm of her hand but, she isn't a role model. And in her own opinion "it's not her job to be a role model" I think I'd like to have a career with taste . I do applaud how far she's come in her own career but, it upsets me that so many girls feel the need to have a standard to live up to by looking like her.

Amneris, I know a lot of people feel that way, but is that really her fault? I never found myself comparing myself to her to the point where I thought I couldn't succeed because of it. I mean, if you want to bring that up, some people feel ruined when they discover an amazing belter like Sutton or Idina, and they compare themselves to them, thinking they could never do that. That's not their fault, and this is not Britney's fault.

I think Britney cares more about the girls that look up to her than she admits to. If she didn't feel responsible at all, I doubt she'd try to keep smoking and drinking, and pre-marital sex under wraps for so long. Obviously there's some sort of concern for the influence she's giving there, but she can't be responsible for everything they feel or do. I wouldn't say she's a great role model, but it could always be worse. She never makes a point to insult someone, and she's never violent, nor does she have any violent lyrics orf any kind. She's not promoting anything that could really hurt someone.

TheaterBaby, I hope you're not assuming she has no staying power, because I can assure you she'll be around for a while.

Ah yes, Broadway, the place where *has been* or *not quite* popstars, are welcome with open arms. Again, blame the casting directors. Right BG2?

Without commenting on lip sync issues or the way she dresses, I have one thing to say--

I'm finding all of this talk about how that's how a 22 year old acts and let her be that way for a while and enjoy being young yada yada yada very disturbing. As a 23 year old I'm actually very insulted by it. I certainly do not act as she does, and neither do any of my friends. I'm a college-educated, professional self-admitted yuppie who takes pride in the fact taht I can have an intelligent conversation with pretty much anyone (even had the opportunity to do so with a city councilman the other day). I find the idea that Britney Spears is a representation of people in my age group is incredibly insolent and ignorant of what we are capable of.

Britney, though not a favorite, I respect. One of my best friends is in love with her and I guess I sort of saw from him the beautiful young girl she is. She is gorgeous. She doesnt need to be wearing sexy clothes or make up to be gorgeous like lots of people I know. We all know Britney is no Kelly Clarkson, but she can outdance any American Idol any day. I'm actually finding myself hooked to Me Against the Music and cant wait for her CD to debut- tomorrow right?
And someone on here called Madonna talentless and wow, thats a hard hit. She is what Micheal Jackson is to the male pop stars. She revolutionized music and has been going on for so long, that its hard to not call her a legacy. Go watch EVITA to see how amazing she is.

Personally, I can't stand Britney Spears. She comes of as extremely fake in my opinion. How can she possibly claim to not know that she's looked upon as a sex symbol? Honestly, her only talents worth speaking of are her media savvy and her flat stomach. The girl can dance, I'll give her that, but she can't sing to save her life. Each album gets progressively more nasal and manipulated. I've heard 10 year olds with stronger voices than hers. I do admit that she is good at manipulating her celebrity, but that can only get you so far. When the novelty wears off, you'd better have the talent to back yourself up. And in my opinion she does not posess the necessary talent to stay around. In the words of Forrest Gump, "that's all I have to say about that."

Yeah, I've seen the clips of her on Star Search and they make me even sadder than her current singing does. I don't think she sounds great at all--she only sounds like a little girl pushing her voice too hard to achieve a maturity she doesn't have. *shrugs* Just my opinion though.

ErikJ972, that's a great thing to point out, and I think it is something many people fail to realize. When I hear people insult her intelligence and her career path, they fail to put themselves in her shoes.

I guess that's my problem. I wouldn't find myself in her shoes no matter how much you paid me. I'm not compromising myself, I wouldn't take off my clothes and call it art, I don't have to express myself by exposing myself or wearing close to nothing, I'm not going to be the one people are disgusted with and I won't be the subject of everyone's jokes, I'm certainly not playing the "shock factor" game, and I wouldn't parade myself onstage pretending to sing and call it performing.

personally i dont believe that has anything to do with theatre.can we limit this to theatre. thank you.
