This is from today's LA Weekly:
"Given that it's Oscar time, I nominate the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Best Bunch of Hypocrites. That’s because this year’s dirty little secret is the anecdotal evidence pouring in to me about hetero members being unwilling to screen Brokeback Mountain. For a community that takes pride in progressive values, it’s shameful that Hollywood’s homophobia may be on a par with Pat Robertson’s.
"Despite the hype you’re reading in the press and on the Internet about Brokeback, with its eight nominations, being the supposed favorite to take home the Best Picture Oscar on March 5, Crash could end up winning. The issue isn’t which film is better. The issue is more like which movie was seen by the Academy. Frankly, I find horrifying each whispered admission to me from Academy members who usually pose as social liberals that they’re disgusted by even the possibility of glimpsing simulated gay sex. Earth to the easily offended: This movie has been criticized for being too sexually tame. Hey, Academy, what are you worried about: that you’ll turn gay or, worse, get a stiffie by just the hint of hunk-on-hunk action?"
So the best film of the year could lose the Oscar because straights are afraid to see the movie. The writer points out that the film most likely to benefit is CRASH (a terrible film, probably the least interesting of those nominated and therefore the most popular.)
This will be interesting to see - will it be HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY over CITIZEN CANE?

And some people just didn't think Brokeback was the best movie of the year. Some of us didn't think Crash was terrible, either.
Weird.

We all have our opinions, but at least we both saw both films and can form an honest opinion.
If this is true and true amongst a large group of the Academy, it could make things very interesting. Either way, a film can will Best Picture with only 21% of the vote.

If this is true I recommend a discrimination suit of some kind.
Good point, Pseudolus.
Well everything with BBM and the whole gay contraversy and well, just all the buzz about that movie. I have yet to see it and I think I know most of the things about it. From what I have seen about the golden globes and SAGs(even though crash won) It seems to have won the hearts of some people. I mean if the actor's themselves voted for Crash and they were the only voting then I'm sure BBM would not win but the filmmakers themselves vote at the Oscars and they know which films deserve the win.

I think I can speak for everyone who has posted thus far when I say "What?"

I understand what she was saying. But I had a lot of sugar today.
I fully expect CRASH to win the Best Picture Oscar. When were the Academy Awards ever about quality?

Well that's stupid. Do your jobs, nimrods.
And don't even say that, Luscious. Knock on wood, now.

Re Crash: The thing is, some people did prefer that movie to Brokeback Mountain. People on this board (me included) have said that.
*Knocks on wood*
Plum, I'm hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. I've been disappointed too many times to count. And my favorite movies usually don't even get nominated, let alone win.

Very very recently Luscious was predicting not only a WIN for BM but also that when the win happened he would be awash with tears of joy and pride.
What a difference a month makes, apparently.

Well, if it loses, it won't be because people preferred another movie over it. It will be because of the backlash, or because the voting members didn't see it or whatever other new reasons pop up between now and Oscar night.

I hated the movie, but I'm in. I could use the settlement money.

As it stands, I hope Luscious' first prediction was correct. (I still have to see GN&GL.)
But whether or not you preferred BBM or CRASH - and I've made my preference clear - at least you saw both movies. Even if you came in with preconceptions or if you were the most open-minded person of all time, you saw both movies.

Well, Kringas, if CRASH wins it certainly won't be because it is a good movie. It will be because some straight men couldn't stand the thought of two guys together.
It will join the likes of: CIMARRON, THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH, AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, GIGI, A BEAUTIFUL MIND, etc. - another lousy movie that wins for the wrong reason.
It's the worst nominated picture since GHOST.

And if BROKEBACK does win, I'll still be awash in tears of joy and pride! Try as you might, Namo, you'll NEVER kill my buzz.

I hope his first prediction is correct too. The reflection of a TV screen showing Mr. Lee ("my husband, some hot shot...") in the puddles of tears pouring down the cheeks of Luscious as he is awash with not only joy, but also filled with pride over somebody else's accomplishments will be the enduring image of 2006. Let's knock wood that it happens.

That's not what the backlash will be about at all. The backlash will be about the same exact thing that some people on here have been saying. "ALL RIGHT ALREADY. ENOUGH WITH THE BM."
It's too bad that you can't be happy for someone else's success. I'm moved to tears by other's accomplishments quite often.

So, Crash wasn't a good movie?
