Yeah, I kind of figured they'd make Saul HIV positive.
Didn't seem right to have a story line of "I used to sleep around a lot, but I won't need to be tested because of X, Y and Z..." followed by "Oh, apparently the disease can lay dormant for decades. Fine I'll get tested" and resulting in "There you see, told you everything would be fine.". Wouldn't have been any moral to the story. It was a chilling moment though with his blood and "No, you can't touch me!".
Glad they sorted out Narrow Lake/Ojai. That storyline was more tedious than curious. I wonder if it's going to be as simple as it seems though with their new found wealth? Will it turn out that they accidentally sold it off at some point?
I guess it was right to kill off Robert/Holly (I'm guessing), because their characters seem to have served their purpose with not a whole lot of milage left in them.
I'm kind of hoping they introduce some new characters (NOT in the form of more long lost love children for pete's sake), otherwise it might be a bit flat. Personally, I'm finding Sarah's storyline pretty dull, Tommy's non existent and Rebecca/Justin's squabbling/not knowing what to do repetitive.
I think Kevin/Scotty will remain the more interesting (storyline wise) characters with their new family. Saul's struggle will include them and Nora...whilst Kitty (and I guess Justin) have Roberts secrets to untangle. Beyond them, the rest are being set up as supporting and pretty boring characters.

As soon as they first mentioned getting tested for HIV I knew where it was headed. The show is about as sublte as a sledgehammer. I am surprised when the doctors gave him his results they just let him off the phone so quickly. You'd think they'd want to counsel him to make sure he was okay, not to mention discuss what sort of options he had.
This sounds so rotten, but he's 72 and he's been asymptomatic for god know hows long? It probably ain't gonna be the HIV that kills him.
This show just gets dumber with each episode. And maybe it's because the guy who plays Justin isn't a great actor, but his lines were especially creaky. That stupid fight with him and Rebecca? So dumb.
Wasn't there a rumor the show was gonna jump ahead a few years next season (like Desperate Housewives did a few years back)? Then they can already be running the water business, so it will be just like the show always was, because that's really what this show does. It may jump forward in time, but the show itself never really seems to move forward. It's just the same old crap over and over and over.
Also, did they ever wrap up the Ryan storyline or did they just drop it? I can't remember.

Posted: 5/17/10 at 8:40pmI thought the same thing about letting Saul off the phone so quickly. Maybe he just hung up while someone was still talking. I don't think Holly's dead.

I'm wondering whether Saul already knew and faked the phone call?
He looked pretty down beforehand, and wouldn't let Nora see the phone when he rang, is all...

I'm wondering whether Saul already knew and faked the phone call?
He did start talking almost immediately after he dialed!
I would be very surprised if that were the case. Even that much of a layer to the storytelling is all but unheard of in Walkerland.
This show is idiotic. I really can't tell you why I keep watching it.

Posted: 5/17/10 at 10:54pmI hadn't watched the show in months but caught the finale. I hadn't seen any promos. I wish I had. I was watching with a friend who lost her daughter back in October in a car accident involving a semi truck. That was rough.

Posted: 5/17/10 at 11:16pmI don't know why I keep watching this show either. I think it's because I've invested so much of my time in it. There is no longer anything good about this show. Every single storyline to the show is completely contrived and uninteresting.

It's still one of my favorite shows and my favorite way to wrap up the weekend before I go to bed on Sunday night.
I am sad to see Robert go. I thought when they said Rob Lowe was leaving the show and Calista Flockhart was going to be on the show less next season, that meant they were moving to Washington. I had no idea they would kill him and make it so final.
Rob Lowe just doesn't like to stay put on a television series, does he?

I didnt know Calista wasn't going to be on as much next season. That upsets me,
i'm a big fan. And count me in as someone else who looks forward to it every week.

I am not crazy about the new Saul storyline. And I agree, they weren't subtle about it. When it first came up in the beginning of the show I was like "where did that come from"? So now I guess he is out of the restaurant partnership, or at least he won't be able to cook in the kitchen. I figure that will be a storyline.
I will probably watch next season but I really am upset that Lowe is leaving. I really liked the character and his portrayal of him. And I love his voice.

Posted: 5/18/10 at 10:48amme too Phyllis. Their storyline is getting to be annoying. SHE is really annoying. After she announced that she took the job without telling him, I was kind of through with her. I expect them to break up next season.

Posted: 5/18/10 at 10:50amHe bugs me just as much. Their fights always feel so "I know you are, but what I am?" He is one of the most poorly written characters on the show.

His character is poorly written but the worst for me are Kevin & Scotty.
Well I guess that decides it, I am not watching next season!! lol

He is and it is very annoying. it just seems that they go through or say the same things every episode. The whole baby thing is getting kind of old and Modern Family has that storyline covered!
But I do like the show for almost everyone else. I just love Rachel Griffiths. I have become a Calista fan through this show. But the writing has gone down. The dialogue doesn't "crackle" like it did in the first season and the closeness between the family just seems to have gone away a bit. So, now that they are in the water business, are they going to have bottled water at the table instead of wine?! :)

Posted: 5/20/10 at 5:34pmI'm quite disappointed they decided to make Saul HIV+. Can't they think of a different "disease of the week" to give its gay characters? It also almost makes is seem like punishment for being closeted for so long. IF they make him "sick" next season it will be stupid - he's obviously a long-term non-progressor, if he hasn't had any symptoms yet, very unlikely he'll suddenly develop them now.

Posted: 5/20/10 at 6:09pmThat was my thought DayDreamer. All of a sudden this past fling pops up and in 2 days he is tested and positive. It felt like they couldn't come up with something else. As soon as t he past fling was mentioned and they asked him if he had been tested, I knew what the outcome would be.

Saul isn't suddenly going to become "sick". In fact, I think the HIV+ angle will advance his storyline in that it will allow him to completely come to terms with his sexuality and lead him to a loving and fulfiliing relationship. It will show someone "living" with the disease, and that being HIV+ isn't necessarily a death sentence. I think it will be a good thing. I have a great deal of respect for this show for its depiction its gay characters and handles their storylines. I remember a time about 20 years ago when the image of two gay men simply lying side-by-side in the same bed created a huge controversy and ignited a storm of protests and boycotts. The show was THIRTYSOMETHING. Many of the actors and producers involved in that show are involved in the production of B&S, including the actor (now producer) who played one of the gay men, David Marshall Grant. We've come a long way. And yes ... we've still got a long way to go. But B&S has contributed greatly to the inclusion and acceptance of honest and beliveable gay characters on television. And for that, I applaud it.

When the show does something right (Kevin's discovery of paralyzing his first love), it can be sensational.
But then...THEN. The precious, lighthearded humor. It's like The Walker Family Follies. I'm always shocked that the underscoring for those moments isn't The Baby Elephant Walk.
I stick with it, though. Mostly because I hate myself.

LOL
Supposedly, they are still going to advance a year next season. However, I still hope they don't make Saul get sick. I hope they show a man LIVING with HIV. Better yet--let the HIV be a secondary part of his story.
