No surprise, I know...
But listening to it is about to send me into a hypertensive crisis. He is imposing his religious beliefs to veto something that is in keeping with the law of the land (legal abortions).
He be singing a different tune if he had juvenile diabetes, paralysis, Alzheimer's, or any number of other medical issues.
I'm so frustrated that I just don't even know what to do. I despise this man and his posse.

Because, you know, it's a matter of morality and he doesn't want our govenment to be involved in anything immoral.
Lying about WMD, invading a country, holding detainees in Guantanamo,
torture, and god knows whatelse, though...not so bad. But putting aborted fetuses to practical use...unacceptable.
I'm so freakin' angry that I almost need to be sedated.

Posted: 7/19/06 at 2:35pmThe Mother of a good friend of mine is receiving stem cell treatment and is doing very well with it. The interesting thing is she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and agreed to the experimental treatment to help others in the future, not really expecting it to help her. But to everyone's delight, she is benefiting herself.

Eh, this is ridiculous.
In 2003 I had a really bad horseback riding accident. While jumping a jump, I misjudged the timing, and as a result sent myself tumbling to the ground, and my 1200+ pound horse right down after me, and ontop of me. He landed on em in such a way that my heart was compressed, and blood was forced into my head at such a rate that I bled from my eyes, ears, nose and mouth. IN the process, the force of the blood damaged my optic nerves.
My visionj in my good eye is, at best, 20/200 which is considered legally blind. The vision in my bad eye is worse, the number so low they don't even tell me. The one hope they have right now IS stem cell research. To think that I can one day drive, NOT have to sit close at a Broadway show, be able to see people and know who they are when they come walking toward me is amazing. Typing is a chore as well, I'm leaning over my laptop as we speak, my nose nearly on the keyboard. I'm grateful for what vision I do have, but with stem cells, it might mean I don't have to hold a book I'm reading nine milimeters away from my face to see it. I may actually be able to use a lap top in my LAP! The fact that this putz is vetoing something that can make such a difference in my life is like a smack in the face.
I kno wit isn't just me who has problems, believe me I know. THis is just me, personally, talking. I'm sue I'm not the only one on the board who can be helped by stem cell research, and am not the only one wo feels that "slapped in the face" feeling because of Bush.
Sorry if my typing is really awful, I don't really have the heart to spell check right now.

Posted: 7/19/06 at 3:07pmthis bill is about federal funding for stem cell research. is it not legal for private firms to do any and all the research they want?

Posted: 7/19/06 at 3:11pmDid he veto Stem Cell or Embryonic Stem Cell research? There's a big difference. Adult stems and cord blood stems are already approved, and federal funds are appropriated to that research, by him. Medical researchers expect to use technologies derived from adult stem cell research to treat spinal cord injuries, cancer, muscle damage, and a host of other conditions and diseases. The posts here imply that he is against stem cell research. Unless something has changed of which I am unaware. I can't believe I am actually defending President Bush. Well, actually, I'm not defending his decision, I am attacking the inaccuracies of this thread's subject line, and many of the posts here. So far, only adult stems have been used in experimental treatments. Embryonic stems have not produced any results in that area. Although, most scientists believe that they would.

Well, I'm not surprised. I'm certainly not happy about it, but I'm not surprised.
I'm fully prepared to get slammed for this, but the thought occurred to me this morning: It seems to me that stem cells can be compared to plants. Both are alive but certainly not cognizant. And if someone is going to get all up in arms about the sanctity of life that a stem cell has, why aren't they so passionate about deforestation?
Oh, yeah: Leveling a forest isn't as important as protecting the "murder" of innocent stem cells.
#19re: bush announces stem cell veto
Posted: 7/19/06 at 3:14pmI don't belive anyone has an issue with what is done to the stem, but the harvesting and cloning of embryos, to get the stem, is the issue.

The adult stem cells apparently are not as useful:
===
A group of 80 Nobel laureates eloquently addressed this concern in a letter dated February 22, 2001, to President Bush, saying:
"It is premature to conclude that adult stem cells have the same potential as embryonic stem cells -- and that potential will almost certainly vary from disease to disease. Current evidence suggests that adult stem cells have markedly restricted differentiation potential. Therefore, for disorders that prove not to be treatable with adult stem cells, impeding human pluripotent stem cell research risks unnecessary delay for millions of patients who may die or endure needless suffering while the effectiveness of adult stem cells is evaluated."

JB: Embryonic stem cells.
As part of the debate has said, there are also thousands of frozen embryos from fertility clinics that are no longer needed.
So toss them out and incinerate them?
Or do something useful and find cures to many diseases and conditions?
As someone who works with stem cells (albeit, bone marrow stem cells), the possibilities of what embryonic stem cells can do, are breathtakingly endless...
#23re: bush announces stem cell veto
Posted: 7/19/06 at 3:25pmWhether or not it's as useful, is beside the point. Besides, it appears to be conjecture on their part, as there is no real evidence to support their stance, just instinct (which I agree with, by the way). However, that post has nothing to do with the point of my post, which was about the inaccuracy of this thread's subject line and the many posts contained within it. Not adult vs embryonic stem cells.

Many of the adult stem cell lines that he "approved" back in 2001 (I think) are compromised, and are of little if any use for research.
Many states, such as California, have embryonic stem cell research authorized, but the holy grail of research is federal funding.
Bush's issue is that embryonic stem cell research "destroys a life." I guess it is just better to throw them away.
"They remind us of what is lost when embryos are destroyed in the name of research. The remind us that we all begin our lives as a small collection of cells. And they remind us that in our zeal for new treatments and cures, America must never abandon our fundamental morals," Bush said.
George, those are your fundamentalist morals, not our fundamental morals. I just wish that some of those so intent on protecting the the unborn would show the same compassion for those living.
