you can't reason with them, zone, so you have to appeal to the things that they will understand.
Dear Senator ________,
I read today that you voted against H.R.810. While I understand that your vote on principle, I would respectfully ask that you consider changing it.
The vast majority of the American people favor this research. 60% of Americans believe that the government should be funding such research. The embryos used in such research are not going to be saved. They will be thrown away. Congress has seen to it that prohibitions are in place in the form of S.3504, which was unanimously approved, to prevent scientists from growing and harvesting embryos specifically for this science. You've made sure that won't happen which is a good thing.
But to deny any new lines, to preclude any government funded research into a field which could potentially raise the lame from their beds and wheelchairs based on the idea that doing so will prevent those embryos from being destroyed is wrong. These are embryos that will be destroyed. The American people understand that and will hold accountable in the voting booth those who vote to deny their relatives, family and friends a chance at every possible avenue of a cure for their ailments.
The safeguards are in place, please think over whether you want to be on the side of progress. With this vote so close, any senator who changes now will be remembered. Those who supported this all along will be forgotten, but history will remember the brave few who chose progress over partisanship.
I hope that you will be one of them.

"potentially raise the lame from their beds and wheelchairs"
Is that really the most appropriate way to word that? (not being catty or bitchy, just wondering if maybe there is a a more tactful way of saying that) "The lame" seems (and this coming from someone who abhors political correctness) a little tacky.
ETA, can i steal this?

Good letter. Fat lot of good it will do, though, sending it that bunch of mindless Republican yahoos.
Better bet is to vote their neanderthal asSes out of Congress and return the country to Democratic priciples.
Thanks for writing it.

Posted: 7/19/06 at 5:23pmnow pj, i'm usually all for berating the mindless sheep who run this country, but really, would it kill you send the letter? Honestly, it's not like sending it will cost you anything but some time and it's not gonna make things any worse sending it. the worse thing that can happen is the senators ignore, but one or two, or maybe even four might listen if enough people try.

look at the list of senators, find out who's got a safe seat. who's from a district in which they could shore up their moderate support. if you want a change you have to do more than just sign an online petition and think that's doing something. get involved do the research and target who's vulnerable and who might be swayed.

The Democrats should thank Bush for giving them this issue for the November election.
How many of those on the list are in contested seats papa, do you know?
I am actually surprised that the Republicans let this come to vote right now - while this plays to the base, it does not play to the moderates and independents. And, even some conservative Republicans do not follow Bush's logic on this issue.
As I said before "get your religion out of my science."
BTW papa, nice letter.

the following are up for re-election this fall:
allen (r-va)
burns (r-mt)
dewine (r-oh)
ensign (r-nv)
kyl (r-az)
nelson (d-ne)
santorum (r-pa)
talent (r-mo)
thomas (r-wy)
i would imagine that those are the folks who'll be looking to turn out the base by voting againts this. well, except for nelson. that leaves an awful lotta names that can't be hurt this fall by pissing off the extremists.

This issue makes me wonder why our country gives our president the right to veto in the first place. He is one man. One man out of 330 million. Yes, he is our country's "choice," our "representative", but it seems to me that our congressmen are much, much more representative of the people than the president is, and if a majority of them vote yes, why should one man be able to override their opinion because of his personal beliefs? It seems to me that this is a fatal flaw in our governmental system. Am I missing something here?
Watching the news today made my stomach hurt.

Oh, I don't give a **** what any of you all say, I'm starting a letter-writing campaign to Santorum tomorrow. I didn't take down the Abercrombie and Fitch corporation so I could have tea and scones with them. When I get riled up about something, someone's bound to change their mind. I changed A&F and I will change Santorum.
I know people in local Pittsburgh politics. I am going to do something about this because I will not have my own state misrepresent me like this.

Posted: 7/19/06 at 8:05pmDid you guys hear, last fall, about a group of girls who started a "Girlcott" against Abercrombie and Fitch to get rid of their T-shirts that bear slogans that are offensive to women? I was one of them. I was interviewed or several national news outlets, and our story was in over 10,000 news stories around the world. We got Abercrombie to take their most offensive couple shirts off the shelves and et with them with some new ideas. We're stil fighting the battle, but it just proves what even a group of teenage girls can do when they get fired up.

Thank you, Iheart. You remind us of how grass roots activism can still work miracles. And we need them, since these are dark times.
I was in the same place as Iflit when I watched Bush, surrounding himself with babies -- as if each of those children would've otherwise been mere research fodder. It's shoddy, his turning this political grandstanding into a gloating PR opp for his base (the next time we have a town-destroying hurricane, tell them all to build and ark and then get on it and stay there). And I'm a card-carrying Christian, folks. Who doesn't believe this is the grand plan Jesus had in mind. George W. Bush and his base-satisfying photo ops.
I cannot get past the irony -- today we learned on the front pages that 100 people are dying per DAY in Iraq. Remember Iraq? Momentarily blown off the front page by the other middle east crisis. All while Bush complains about the unavailability of Diet Coke at the G-8 Summit, like the whiny dry-drunk frat boy that he is. What does he think of those 100 per day souls, as he contemplates with characteristic smugness, those cell blobs he's today officially "saved." Save me from his concept of "the culture of life."
These are times that try our very definition of moral courage. To suggest that his stance was morality at work was beneath contempt. As is he.
