The idiocy of this decision makes my head explode.
The work being done in stem cell research right now is SO PROMISING!
I think this has become my number one issue to fight for! It's time to start the heavy-lifting.

"Whether or not it's as useful, is beside the point."
Tell that to people suffering from Parkinsons, Alzheimers, diabetes, spinal cord damage, paralysis, leukemia, etc.
No evidence to support this the possibilities of this? Perhaps it's because we're not allowed to do research on it, because of the ban.

I'm not saying there isn't usefulness in embryonic stem cell research (people here really need to improve their reading skills)! I said is has nothing to do with the intent of my post. Of course research is useful and important. How ridiculous! I refuse to engage in a pissing contest with you rabid Bush haters. I'm not defending him. I can't stand the guy. My post had to do with the veto. It was embryonic stem cell research, not stem cell research. I've yet to see the proper term used, except in my own post. You people can be so silly, at times.

Sueleen, your friend's cancer treatment is likely from adult stem cells, which most scientific study agrees are not as versatile as embryonic stem cells.
Also, there's a freeze on new stem cells being harvested. I do believe this bill, while not providing funding yet (wouldn't that be in a budgetary spending bill?) would have legalized "harvesting" these cells, mainly from those embryos currently in freezers while the parents who paid to originally put them there have long sinced moved and stopped paying for their storage.
Another FYI: there are currently 22 lines of stem cells available for study right now.

Semantics in a thread title takes precedence over what's actually being discussed?
Yeah.
Sure.

I don't belive anyone has an issue with what is done to the stem, but the harvesting and cloning of embryos, to get the stem, is the issue.
Are you "towing" a party line all of a sudden, Johnboy? The issue, as you suggest, is NOT that people are suddenly going to grow embryos for harvesting. There are tons of embryos right now "on ice" and in danger of being trashed or stored indefinitely at great cost which could otherwise be used for some good.

Kiddies, close your ears and your eyes. There is going to be some profanity in this post. You have been warned.
Santorum, that mother****ing son of a bitch. I live in PA and I hate Rick Santorum with every bone in my body, not only because of this but because of so many other ways he's screwed over our state for the past ten years. My only consolation is that my grandfather hit him in the crotch with an umbrella accidentally about ten years ago. Yay pap.
About this whole stem-cell research bill. Much like In The Lost, I have personal (and visual) reasons for needing stem cell research. I was born with congenital glaucoma and lost vision in my left eye at seven months old. I have also lost a lot of vision in my right eye. I can't do so many things that normal people can do, and it's possible that the pressure of built-up fluid in my eye could deteriorate the optic nerve and cause me to go completely blind in a few years. If stem cell research comes through, I might be able to see again someday. It kills me that President George W. Bus would rather see embryos, who are only arguably alive, stay so as opposed to unarguably living, breathing people with full minds, emotions, and life experiences. I am so angry right now that I'm actually sweating. The Prsident should be a representative of the peope of his country, and right now over seventy percent of his people are against him vetoing this bill. I can't believe this bastard EVER got elected.

I Heart My Geek, our moral responsibility to people with any kind of illness or disability, as far as this man is concerned, only extends to keeping someone alive for the benefit of the family. Cure, schmure.

Posted: 7/19/06 at 3:52pmas far as new embryos being created for the purpose of harvesting, the house and senate both voted unanimously to prohibit such acts. 100-0 and 425-0. so there's no debate about that.

And as for what one poster said about plants. I am just as rabidly angry about deforestation as I am about this.
I get riled up really easily. Can you tell?

I hope that those of you who want change will actually sign the petition and then remember to get out and vote these bums out of office! It's a shame how few people actually bother to vote.

I think this is an issue which can, and should, unite all of us who might be divided on other issues.
We are ALL going to be touched by illness, or know someone touched by illness, which has the potential to be cured, or at least managed, by findings which are the result of stem cell research.
I can think of NO reason why anyone in their right mind would want to stop funding and research for something which has the potential to change the course of human history for the better.

I bet yer proud of yer boy today, papa. His first veto...
What a week it's been for him!
Near-civil-war in the country he invaded, Taliban resurgence in the country he invaded and abandoned, war in the Holy Land and he does nothing--oh wait, he goes to an international conference and demeans and molests the heads of state of England and Germany and now...he denies the advances of medical science to cancer patients and cripples.
What a guy! You must be so proud you still support him SLAVISHLY.
What's he going to do on Thursday and Friday to top all THAT?

as i have said before, pj, i disagree with the president on many issues. this happens to be one of them and i have written several gop senators who voted no to outline the reasons both politically and realistically as to why they should change their votes and push to override the president's veto.
i would imagine that such an override will come to a vote in late january or early february.
i must say, i am shocked though that you'd take an opportunity to try to make this about me.

I think my favorite reason given as to why he vetoed, came from Tony Snow, "The simple answer is he thinks murder's wrong. The president is not going to get on the slippery slope of taking something living and making it dead for the purposes of scientific research."
First of all, who taught Tony Snow how to speak english? "taking something living and making it dead?"
Second, so, the president is ok with taking something living and making it dead just for the hell of it? If we are gonna take something living and make it dead, why not do it for scientific research? I mean, if we do it for any other reason isn't that just murder? Oh wait, i forgot, this is the president who claims to be pro life and yet over saw more executions than any other governer EVER.

"...taking something living and making it dead?"
I guess he hasn't been following the war he started or the new one he is blessing. He is the worst president ever!
Sign the petition and pass it on to your friends. Only a few more votes are needed to over ride his veto.

Geek, I love your grandpa.
And I'm glad you got the point I was trying to make between stem cells and deforestation. Frankly, people aren't furious enough about that, but because it doesn't involve human embryos, the government doesn't care.

you can sign as many petitions as you want, but nothing beats a call or letter or email to one of the senators. the list of those who voted no are on page one of this thread.
only 4 votes need to change.
while these are republicans save for nelson, remember that you are trying to convince them to do something you want them to do, so insulting them (while making you feel better) is probably not the best course of action.
