"And, even some conservative Republicans do not follow Bush's logic on this issue."
EVERY Republican I know is both pro-stem cell research and pro-choice.

the house override vote went down 235-193 with 5 not voting. so that's 54 votes short of the 2/3 needed to override. even if the 14 democrats who voted no switch sides that's 40 more votes needed.
following are those who voted against it. democrats are in italics:

here's where to get their contact information. this thread has been clicked over 1,000 times. if even 1/4 that many people from here took the time to email some of these folks it would be a deluge of emails. is this issue worth your time?

Thank you, papa.
Thank you for providing everyone with the information we need to do what we ALL should be doing: writing and contacting those who can change this terrible decision!
I can't imagine that there's ANYTHING more important for ANYONE to be doing!

When Macy's changed their window display during Pride there were multiple threads of outrage and page after page of copies of letters being written to the store in protest. People were passionate about that important issue (discrimination). As they should have been.
Where's the passion for THIS issue?
Certainly this issue deserves equal consideration?
If you've writtten a letter, will you share it with us? Papa shared one. Any others?

Dear Representative ________,
I read today that you voted against H.R.810. While I understand that your vote on principle, I would respectfully ask that you consider changing it.
The vast majority of the American people favor this research. 60% of Americans believe that the government should be funding such research. The embryos used in such research are not going to be saved. They will be thrown away. Congress has seen to it that prohibitions are in place in the form of S.3504, which was unanimously approved, to prevent scientists from growing and harvesting embryos specifically for this science. You've made sure that won't happen which is a good thing.
But to deny any new lines, to preclude any government funded research into a field which could potentially raise the lame from their beds and wheelchairs based on the idea that doing so will prevent those embryos from being destroyed is wrong. These are embryos that will be destroyed. The American people understand that and will hold accountable in the voting booth those who vote to deny their relatives, family and friends a chance at every possible avenue of a cure for their ailments.
The safeguards are in place, please think over whether you want to be on the side of progress. With this vote so close, any senator who changes now will be remembered. Those who supported this all along will be forgotten, but history will remember the brave few who chose progress over partisanship.
I hope that you will be one of them.
that's my letter. use it if you like or write your own, but write, call, fax, send smoke signals.

I never knew this before CKeaton said it, but according to Rep. Mo Udall's website, there is a "congressional courtesy" that provides that all letters written by residents of a representative's district to other members will simply be referred to the appropriate representative for reply, and vice versa.
So I am writing to President Bush, Senators Schumer and Clinton and Representative Carolyn Maloney.
I have written to other members of Congress before. I never know Carolyn was getting all my mail. Well, at least she know how I feel about things, but I'm not so sure I think this is right.
Does anyone know if the same hold true for the Senate?

Re: H.R.810
Dear Senators Schumer and Clinton and Representative Maloney:
As you do, I fully support embryonic stem cell research and the hope it offers to American families. Despite the president's veto today, this issue is too important to let be a victim of his shameless and shameful partisan political posturing. If 67% of Americans support this research and 67% disapprove of the president's performance, it is clear that he is taking this action to pander to his core, while saying to the rest of us, "I don't care if you die."
Embryonic stem cell research doesn't "kill children." For the president to say that is not only disingenuous, it is an insult to all Americans and especially to the innocent children his handlers had stand there with him as props, while he uttered this statement he knows is false.
If George Bush really honored human life, he would not prevent scientists from helping people with cancer, Alzheimer's, ALS and others diseases. If he really honored human life, he would have respect for science.
If George Bush really honored human life, he wouldn't have turned Americans into torturers in Iraq. If he really honored human life, he would take the lead at finally finding lasting peace for all people in the Middle East.
Please continue to do the right thing and fight George Bush and do everything you can for federal funding of stem cell research.
[yr pal,
Joey]

Auggie, I'm with you. The photo ops with Bush surrounded by impossibly adorable babies that he "saved" from certain death makes me sick.
Lately, I've taken to cutting out select photos of Bush from the paper and captioning them. The one that ran today, with Bush hoisting a 1-year-old aloft with an air of completely phony reverence, makes me sorely tempted to cut it out and make him a speech balloon proclaimimg "I'm a d**k."
