So I watched it and loved it. It was mostly everything I wanted and expected from a Captain America's origins story. But the added stuff, like the musical bit and the comic within the comic was really well-done and really clever. I even got excited, probably way too excited, with the Wilhelm's scream included. I am very partial to this character, so take this with a grain of salt, but I thought the movie was pretty stand alone from its Avengers tag until the last 3 minutes that connected The Avengers sub-plot. That bit was directed by Joss Whedon btw.
I kept on reading the effects and fight scenes were lackluster. I actually thought the brief zero gravity fight with Red Skull and Captain America was pretty intriguing. How often do you have the hero and villain come to blows in mid-air, all while having no such super powers of the sort? The action scenes were welded into the aesthetic and style that made me appreciate it for what it was. There were cheesy moments to be sure, but I had a grin on my face.
I was pretty much teary-eyed in the final 10 minutes. Oh, Steve Rogers. Peggy, if she were alive, would be in her nineties.*
I really bought Evans in the role. There was no hint of Johnny Storm or really anything in his previous work that I have seen from him. Hugo Weaving as Red Skull was fantastic and I liked Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, and Tommy Lee Jones in their roles.
My only complaints were there was too little of Bucky Barnes and I really was not into Dominic Cooper's Howard Stark. The accent was either too high or breaking. I felt like he was also closer to proto-Tony Stark when Howard Stark was his own man. Cooper's Howard Stark did not really distinguish himself, other than looking like Robert Downey Jr., all while his involvement in all of this wartime activity is hardly ever questioned. Nonetheless, this was my favorite Marvel Studios movie since the first Iron Man film.
**SPOILERS**
*-If there is a sequel with Captain America as a stand alone character in modern time, his future story line does involve somebody from Peggy's family that has been featured in a lot in the comics. Also, some old villains could definitely make a comeback as well.
