Why did he need a barber?

He probably liked getting that neck shaved.
I have an irrational hate for Hillary Swank, can't stand her in interviews and certainly can't stand her holier-than-thou approach to everything she does... I have a very rational hate for CARNAGE though (bringing it back!)
I too hate Malkovich.
But I love MAURICE, novel and film.

Polanski was completely out of his element with this (IMO) very strong source material. All of the unfortunate actors have been shown to far better, even spectacular advantage elsewhere and there's no reason they couldn't have been terrific in this. I'm laying it on the director.

John C. Reilly has never been spectacular ever.
^ Though he doesn't rise to Hunt-levels (or is it 'sink to Hunt-depths'?), I must agree with that.
Plus...the visual of Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly pro-creating...

Oh, c'mon. He was great in Walk Hard, Magnolia, Boogie Nights, and on Broadway in True West. Also saw him in a workshop of the musical Marty - heartbreaking.
John C. Reilly was completely miscast as Stanley Kowalski in the Streetcar revival 8 years ago. WTF?!
I'll never understand the casting of Reilly as Stanley, I'm not sure that you can successfully play Amos Hart and make a good Stanley. Reilly has gotten lazy as of late, but he was great in CHICAGO, THE HOURS, and MAGNOLIA. I also thought he did good work in WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN.

I think there was an interesting idea behind casting John C. Reilly as Stanley, the idea of not having a traditional Brando-esque sex god in the role, and it might have worked if they'd cast someone who was sexy but not in the Brando-esque kind of way (outlandish good looks, incredible muscular body, etc.). There are plenty of very sexy guys who aren't necessarily Brando-type -- I always thought that a younger James Gandolfini would have been interesting.
Alas, John C. Reilly had the sex appeal of Pope Benedict. A misfire.
LOL
The Pope may feel bad about that comparison.
Who? Y'Eggs Benedict?
He should be honored to live up to a John C. Reilly comparison.
Roscoe, James Gandolfini as Stanley is truly inspired casting. I agree with you, I get where they were coming from in casting Reilly, but casting Reilly himself was a terrible idea. He's just too much of a Mitch, which I guess was the general criticism at the time. I don't think Stanley needs to be a Brando type, but he does need to have a brutish manliness to him. Gandolfini played that up in the original production of GOD OF CARNAGE (again, bringing it back), he'd have been brilliant in the role.
The thing with Stanley is that there's no "conflict" in an outsider's view of him, unless he has that raw sexual appeal.
He's an asshole and a jerk. A dangerous one at that. If you take away his physical appeal, you have nothing left. You take away his "power" over anyone and anything.
What best12 said. And I'd like to add that if Stanley isn't sexy, then Blanche is undercut as well. It's her inability to stop flirting with Stanley that ultimately brings about her demise.
IMO, when Stanley says in the next to last scene, "You and me, we've had this date from the beginning," he is speaking the truth according to him and to Williams (and even Blanche knows he is right). (This isn't to justify his rape of a woman who is having a nervous breakdown; nor is it to say his attack of Blanche is anything but rape under our legal codes.)
But speaking in dramatic terms, Blanche and Stanley have been doing a paso doble all evening. If Stanley isn't attractive, then Blanche is just a whore looking for a place to stay.

The Pope's name is Francis.
Jodie Foster performance is the most annoying since Shelly Duvall in The Shining.
Roxy, I 3,000 percent understand your response, but I've grown to really love Duvall in "The Shining,"

It seemed like she was a CGI creation with even less soul.
I forgive you Reggie
I forgive you Reggie
P.S. but her real acme is in a movie I don't much care for: "Popeye,"
Again, one man's indefensible position, but I think she gives a truly great performance.
