The moral of this thread: no matter what your interests and previous biases may be, you will hate the film Carnage as long as you have the slightest shred of taste.

For the record, I'm in the Mister Matt camp on the Titanic thing, although I don't hate the movie (my biggest problem with the film is that it's about 90 minutes longer than it needs to be, but there are of course many other issues). However, as much as I love the musical, I have yet to see it staged truly effectively--either the massiveness of the production swallows the characters, or the wise choice of focusing on the characters and doing a spared-down production doesn't raise the stakes as much as possible in a massive production. However, I must say that "We'll Meet Tomorrow" is always heart-wrenching, no matter how big the production.

best12bars, I don't know what I did that annoyed you so. In fact, I go out of my way again and again to assert (truthfully) how much I respect your opinions and posts--even when I disagree.

It's one thing to disagree with someone's opinion and do it with a little respect and class. Speaking your mind is no big deal. It's another thing to "go out of your way" to make fun of a film they say they love and consider one of the best, just two posts up. One is a disagreement, the other is "rubbing my nose" in your opinion. Truly annoying.

But if you don't understand how someone can want to escape from her life on a ship sailing to NY, then maybe you can't see my point here either.

Nobody ever wants to escape from their lives on ships. When they're in an emotional state, they always stop and wait patiently for a sensible location. That's why nobody has ever jumped overboard. Ever. Why would anybody do that? Why would they prefer the sharks and certain death? Gee, they're so dumb. That's such a dumb idea.

Right.

EDIT: And you may say you respect my opinion, but you sure don't act like it it. Actually, you thumb your nose at it. (See above for an example.) That's not the same thing as disagreeing with it.

TITANIC is or was the most successful film of all time. It can't stand a little ribbing from the vocal minority? I certainly didn't mean that as a personal attack on you, best12. (And in fact, I posted my satire of the film before I realized how much you enjoyed it.)

I'm sure people do want to escape from their lives while on ship. I have no quarrel with that. But only the mentally ill throw themselves into the sea; everyone else thinks, "As soon as I get off this boat, I need to make some changes."

My point is that trying to escape the temporarily inescapable is a thin premise for a film so top-heavy with spectacle. I recognize Cameron's dilemma: the film is called TITANIC and he wanted to keep the story on the ship. But ships in the mid-Atlantic have rather rigid boundaries, so once he decided on a star-crossed romance, there was only so much he could do.

It's a problem he never solved, imo. But I realize many people went to see it 20 or more times--which is probably the best evidence that I have no business predicting the commercial success of plays or films. I have never claimed to be good at such predictions.

And I am truly sorry that I seemed to disrespect you. On the contrary, the fact that you liked the film so much suggests to me that I need to take another look at it.

(BTW, just so I understand you. You described the musical as "like watching paint dry" to a poster who said he loved it. Not that I'm disagreeing. I didn't see that Yeston musical, but it's certainly how I felt about NINE. But what is the difference between your comment and mine?)

I knew after seeing Titanic opening day that it would be a big fat hit. I just didn't like it very much.

Amen, Matt. Here's the entire plot of the film (I'm using actor's initials):

KW: I'm unhappy; my fiancé is a jerk.
LD: Let's run away together.
KW: Okay.

They run away, only to realize they are on a ship and there is no place to run. So KW returns to her family and crummy fiancé.

(Repeat above a time or two)

Finally, ship sinks, which I admit is a pretty cool 20 minutes or so. And KW and LD end up in the water and STILL there's no place to run. LD escapes the only way possible in this dramatic world: he dies. Good for him!

Old lady throws necklace in the sea.

That best12bars saw this and knew it would be a monster hit is a tribute to his commercial insight. (I mean this last remark; no sarcasm intended.)

ETA: I've now read the entire thread and I see best12 actually LIKES the movie as well. I won't pretend to understand this, but I always respect his opinion.

Your point was driven into the ground. Right after I said I liked the movie.

That's why I found it annoying.

Well, I love TITANIC. Especially the part where she tells Jack Frost that she'll never let go and then let's him go.

I have never seen the Titanic movie because actually seeing it seemed to be beside the point. I have held up my end of light social conversations about the movie with people I had just met two different times. They liked my insights into the movie.

To the OP: The play was wildly overrated. The movie was ignored as it should have been.

Robbie: you bitch.

... And trying to steer this "sinking ship" of a thread back on track for at least two posts before it strikes another iceberg, thanks Playbilly. I at least see, due the insight from several posters here, how it could have been elevated with the great cast, the style, and the direction, to at least engage and entertain for an hour and 15 minutes.

Something the movie never even came close to doing.

Oh, Robbie, I jest. Truly. I called you a bitch because I thought you liked it. It was a silly response to your silly response. Tit for tit.

I really do think people thought Gav hurt my feelings with his post. He didn't. He ran it into the ground with his (not that funny) satirical summary of the plot. My retort was before he went back in and edited it to add that he hadn't even read how much I loved the movie, but that's beside the point. At the time, I thought he was rubbing my nose in it.

We've all agreed and disagreed about films in this thread without getting clownish in an overly long diatribe about it. I just didn't chime back in with a juvenile reenactment of a movie you really love yourself (like, say "Maurice") that thumbed my nose at it. Even if I had said, say, that "Maurice" is at least 30 minutes too long, and that each tedious scene runs at least 5 minutes over what it should, despite having a good cast and story and production ... it wouldn't have been the same thing as a satirical "puppet show," farting out bad dialog summaries and plot inaccuracies. Suffice it to say, it was annoying ... but I'm not crying about it. And don't cry for me, Argentina. I ain't that hurt.

I have a "John Malkovich thing." Can't stand the man. Don't know why he had or has a career. I think he's a terrible actor, with only one exception: Places In the Heart. He was good as the blind man. Everything else I saw him in back then was horrifyingly bad. Like he had been injected with novocain and passed it off as an acting approach. I've skipped many of his later performances because he makes me itch. So I get that "thing" you're talking about.

Oh, get a room, you two.

Can we move on to Lord of the Rings? Talk about overlong. I thought it was a real shame that the year of the third film was so weak that it won Best Picture. I hated that film so much I would have been fine with anything else winning.

I used to go to the same barbershop as John Malkovich. One day as I was exiting, he was entering and there he was right in front of me wearing cotton drawstring pants, sandals, a tank top and round coke-bottle bottom glasses that made his eyes look demented, giving off his typical creepy vibe.

Eeeesh.

I too can't stand Malkovich in anything he's in. For me, it's the voice. He just drones every line and sounds bored out of his skull. Very annoying to watch and hear.
