He wouldn't have lost because of racism before this, but now the issue is anti-Americanism.
Working-class white Democrats and Republicans don't understand "God damn America." They're horrified by that phrase.

"this is about a twenty-year relationship with a man. it's not about religion. it's not about faith. it's not about a church. it's not about white folks who don't get the black experience. it's about choosing to spend over twenty years cheering on a man who preaches divisive racial rhetoric that serves only to promote victimhood, teach hatred and separate people"
So if this is true then why did it not hurt previous presidents(and Nominee McCain) that had ties to Falwell, Robertson, Graham? All of them preach hate about homosexuality, feminism, and catholicism. They all counseled POTUS.....If you are going to bring up the whole character issue also Hilary is still married to a man that lied to us and committed perjury....so by association she is guilty as well and shares his belief that he did nothing wrong in committing this crime...so according to what you believe of Obama, Hilary in tying herself with this man, her husband, for 30 some years, she must be guilty of perjury herself
This elections should be about issues such as the Iraq war, education, poverty, economics....instead we are slinging mud at each other while this country goes in the crapper.
If people were to get elected based on "character" then we would have no elected officials. Is Obama a perfect human being....no. Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, all had character flaws..... Is there still racial tension in this country, you bet. Come down to where I teach...75% of our district is black, we are a low income school district, everything that is wrong with our district goes back to racial tension. I have students telling me that no matter what they do they won't be able to get ahead because they are black....I have white students tell me no matter what the do they won't be able to get ahead because they are poor and can't afford college, but if they were black they would get scholarships...things he said in that speech were true....people are pissed and we need to open a dialogue about it.
But I am sure you will now say that I refuse to look at the heart of the matter....well I do look at the heart of the matter...it is issues that we should be discussing....so look at what each canidate has said about policies and pick that way...

do you not see the difference between an endorsement and a twenty year intimate friendship and mentorship so deep that a book was titled with the person's words? this is not an endorsement of a candidate, this is an explanation of who a candidate is as a person.
a candidate can say or write anything they want. their actions, on the other hand actually define them. with whom they choose to associate defines them. you go ahead and base your vote on pretty words and then be shocked and dismayed when the candidate you support acts in a completely different manner. i'll base my vote upon their actions and the choices they've actually made. see that way i know what i'm getting. wish in one hand and defecate in the other and see which one gets full first.

Violet - At least in my mind there is a difference between seeking out someone endorsement for political gain and sitting in a church for half of your life with a minister's whose words can be used to paint a very ugly picture.
It seems more real when it is your personal church that is associated with the comments, as opposed to a church that represents a voting block.
I dunno, maybe you could argue that it is worse to chase the endorsement of a hate-monger, but that seems more like playing politics, and leads one not to think that the candidate necessarily endorses the words and comments to the same extent as if you sit in the pew as a member, and donate tens of thousands of dollars to the church.
I still think Obama can get past this - the task of winning in November just became much more difficult.

She is now their best chance to beat McCain.

Outside of Papa, I think most of the cynicism for Obama on this board clearly comes from Hillaristas. I don't see a problem with supporting her but not at the sake of the party. Her negative work in Ohio is damaged Obama in ways that hurt the unity in the party.
The people would care enough about this preacher crap were not going to vote for a democrat anyway. The only thing I'm worried about at this point is Hillary running out the clock here which she is doing.

I don't know why he thinks the voters would be outraged if Hillary got the nom. Last time I checked they were neck and neck.

"Last time I checked they were neck and neck. "
They are NOT neck and neck. Obama leads in delegates and will after all the primaries are over. Hillary would have to win 75% of the voting in all the rest of the primaries. This didn't even happen for her when she was the only one on the ticket in Michigan.
I won't say it's impossible but how likely is it? She would have to move mountains.
Listen to what Papa is saying he is correct. "so it comes back to: nominate bammy or else, democrats!" This is not my thinking, I will support whomever gets it, but at this point Hillary would only be stealing this. That's not going to sit well with millions of people who registered and voted for Mr. Obama. And by that I mean outrage.
I doubt there will be rioting, but expect some half-assed attempt at 3rd parties and write-ins. Then for sure McCain will win, the only way he can win. You see this WAS/IS the democrats election to lose. And guess what? Our leaders messed up the entire thing.
At least Republicans get their **** together when they need to. Look at all these McCain haters rallying around him and the base. Rush Limblaugh is crazy about him now.

It's not like he has 70% of the dems, it's closer to 52% to 48%.

Taz unfortunately these polls don't matter at this point. The delegates need to match the super delegates otherwise you're going to have outrage and if this preacher mess doesn't bring down Obama (and it hasn't thus far) he will move on. Even if he loses PA and probably will, he will keep moving.
I think as a superdelegate I would look at something very superficial and that is how quickly Hillary Clinton was caught up to and overcome by a black man during this election. Obama is a performer in this race, time and time again.
I know, I know the media is painting this as this horse race, but the math does NOT ADD up for Hillary and it wont.

Well to be honest, the math can't be added yet b/c the supes can and do change their votes. At the convention they will be told who to support by the top dems. This Obama mess isn't really about how it affects him in the democratic race, it's about how it will affect him in the general election.
And I don't think it's going to blow over anytime soon b/c he didn't sever his ties to Wright which was the only smart thing to do politically. He explained. And while that may seem noble, it doesn't win elections.

Taz you are right, and as much as I hate to say this I've come to understand our Democratic leadership likes to do really stupid things. So I wouldn't be shocked if they threw it to Hillary, but yikes what a mess that would be.
It just seems bizarre that the democratic party would undo their form of "democracy" and the will of the people by kinging Clinton. If anything it would be the straw that broke the camel's back in the history of African Americans in this country. I hate to get all Papa on you here, but yea people are gonna be pissed.

bush took that in 2004 i believe.
you man like iowa, south carolina, alabama, alaska, colorado, georgia, idaho, kansas, missouri, north dakota, utah, louisiana, nebraska, virginia, wyoming and mississippi? shall we nullify those as well since they voted for bush? that would seem to pretty much cripple bammy's chances, huh?
it's one thing to be a zealot and a liar, it's another to be a moron.

A lot could happen before November, people. It's not that much of a shock that McCain is gaining some ground, considering that he's the Republican nominee and the Democrats don't have one yet. Wait and see how many people shift over to whoever ends up being the Democratic nominee.
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter
