Didn't see this posted this; I might be switching to Fios, I love HGTV and am very upset by this!

"NEW YORK (WPIX) - Cablevision, a New York-area cable provider, announced Friday that is will no longer carry The Food Network and HGTV, due to a dispute over distribution rights with the Scripps Networks Interactive."

Holy crap! Looks like my parents are switching, too, especially since seemingly nothing from Food Network makes it to Hulu.

I can't believe Cablevision just did something that made Comcast look good. That takes effort.

Im looking into switching too, but unfortunately my options are pretty limited. I hope Cablevision works it out, but I need my Food Network.

My mom loves the home shows on HGTV and is missing them right now. I watched them occasionally has a hopeful someday homeowner. I like to see what people who make more money than me can have.

I was flipping around the TV a little while ago. When I came upon The Food Network there was a PSA that was on loop that talked about how Cablevision felt that the company that owned both The Food Network as well as HGTV was being unreasonable due to the fact that they were having some financial troubles due to the weak economy as well as the fact that Cablevision feels that they are the cause of this problem and they weren't willing to work with Cablevision to fix it.

Clearly this is just one side of the story so I can't really figure out what exactly is going on just by hearing a one sided story.

What rotten news to begin the New Year. Those are the only tv programs I watch.

Well, I guess I'll get more reading done.

Having had both Cablevision and Comcast....one is worse than the other.

FIOS is the way to go!

Unless something goes wrong and Verizon's repair people don't come two times in a row when they said they would so you miss two days of work for nothing.

Theoretically speaking.

winston, the video in the article I posted shows a little bit of the other side of the story...

I say all Cablevision subscribers unite and demand that our bills now be lowered since they can't seem to come to an agreement for Food Network and HGTV. They must be saving tons of money, right??

Unfortunately, FIOS is not yet available in my area and Direct TV is not an affordable option. I guess what will happen is this will position Cablevision favorably to be able to raise monthly rates once again while they "negotiate" to get these very popular networks back. It's amazing that these events never happen to unpopular networks....It should all be against the law!!

Plum, I had a problem with my DVR box, and the guy was able to fix it on his computer right over the phone in about 10 minutes.

Oh, I'm sure experiences vary. I've had Verizon techs unable to fix my periodic wireless outages for months. I've also had them fix a problem with my landline in one easy trip. Just plain not coming is a little beyond the pale, though.

Though at least they weren't outright hostile like Comcast people can often be.

To get a bit closer to our topic, these cable/channel pissing contests are immensely annoying. I still haven't forgotten Cablevision for the Great YES Boondoggle of a few years back, and now they pull this? Yeugh.

I can't live without HGTV. It's the only channel I watch except for specific TV shows.

Cablevision also increased their prices in my area, AFTER dropping those 2 channels. Does this make sense to anyone else?

Are you all sure your missing these channels?

CNN reported that a deal was made shortly after the first of the year to continue broadcasting via Cablevision.

Apparently, CNN was premature with their story.

I don't even see it posted on their site anymore.

That SUCKS, y'all. Yet another reason why cable company monopolies should be dissolved. You have no choice, because the ONE cable company in your area won't allow it.

Best12Bars, for me I was watching TV early this morning due to not being able to sleep. It was then that I came across that PSA on the food network that I talked about in my last post.

I do wish that this situation was similar to what happened to Fox and Time Warner. However, it isn't. There are laws that were created during the early days of cable that said that a cable provider must provide the basic channels such as Fox, CBS, ABC, NBC etc. But, considering that Food Network and HGTV are not basic channels, then Cablevision has no obligation to air them.

Yeah I still dont have them. I hate Cablevision. Sadly, unless I want satellite, it's my only option at the moment. And I refuse to get raped by DirecTV

We have DishNetwork, and their rates and service have been excellent for us, so far.

The only thing that scares me (a bit) is locking into a contract with them for (say) 18 months or 3 years.

We took a 3 year plan which gave us some premium channels in HD for a penny.

But now we may move, and while I know the dish comes with us, if we get bad reception, we're stuck for the remainder of our contract (which is a little over a year left now).

Ah, well. But I'm very pleased with DishNetwork otherwise. We have it in four rooms (two in HD) with a free HD DVR.
