Has anyone else seen this reality show? It's about a Hoboken bakery that makes high-end cakes. The bakery is staffed by a bunch of stereotypical characters, and if you tuned into the middle of an episode, you'd swear it was a scripted program. Well, we stopped by the bakery the other day to order a birthday cake for our daughter, who is a huge fan, and I can assure you that these people are exactly how they are seen on TV.
By the way, the cakes they make are incredible.

I'm glad you started this thread. Despite my initial misgivings about the show, I just love it. Makes me want ot go to Hoboken and order a cannoli - just for the atmosphere. Did you get to meet Buddy?
He was there, but we didn't get to meet him. Mama was there too, as were many of the other familiar faces from the show. While we were in the store, two groups came in to ask for a photo with him. If he's there when I go back to pick up the cake, I will ask if he'll take a picture with the cake.
We did pick up a couple of pastries while we were there, and they were delicious. It's just a couple of blocks from the Hoboken PATH/NJ Transit station.

I watch the show just for the cakes. Their work is incredible!
Is this the same Buddy who usually participates in the cake challenges on the Food Network?
^ yes, I think so. I saw him on a challenge the other day and was like "oh it's the Cake Boss guy!" haha. This show makes me laugh so hard, they are so crazy yelling at each other all the time!
I watch this as well. The cakes they make are just so amazing.
madbrian- okay- I'll get personal- about how much did the cake cost? I do love watching his show (especially the one where he made this beautiful wedding cake and the bride came in and said it was so ugly and then took colored frosting to it). I've just always been curious as to how much cake stars charge. Also, can't wait to see a picture! Thanks for sharing!

I live right down the street from the bakery on Cake Boss. I like to go there for the cupcakes--especially the Reese's peanut butter cupcakes.
Well...I'm sure they do some things just for laughs...like bringing the ducks/geese instead of doves.
But lots of reality shows do stuff like that.
Kathy Griffin does. If you saw this weeks episode and the sales clerk called her "Katy"...I'm not buying that one. It was funny though.

That horrid woman ruined that beautiful cake. Sometimes you have to wonder if any of it is scripted but that was truly horrible. Buddy made a gorgeous cake and she ruined it.
For those of you who missed it - a mother and daughter came in for a wedding cake. They both had different ideas of what the cake should look like. The mom wanted a classic cake and the daughter wanted something for a funeral. So Buddy suggested making an ivory cake with calla lilies so they could meet in the middle. They both agreed and Buddy went to work. The day before the wedding the daughter comes in and asks to see the cake. He showed it to her and said called if "ugly". Buddy was called away by the for a phone call and while he was gone she got some colored icing and just started squirting it all over the cake. Totally ruined it. Buddy came back and saw what was happening. He took the icing from her and said he didn't appreciate what she'd done and she told him she'd given him an art lesson and he had to make another cake. He said no and he would deliver the cake she'd ruined. Later the mom, who's been a very good customer for many years, calls and says she'll pay for a new cake. He can't say no to a good customer so he keeps the team there all night to make, another, gorgeous cake. This one was white with all these lil pearls and edible tropical flowers on it. When he delivers it the bride won't come and see it. She's too busy commenting to her bridesmaids that she won't give him the satisfaction.
I wonder how long that marriage will last.
She was totally nuts! I would have thrown her out of the store, charged her for the ruined cake, and then send it to her reception with a card that read, "Well, this is what you wanted, BITCH!"
In the train on the way down the shore this morning, I read a piece by Linda Stasi on this show. It sounded pretty good so I decided to give it a try next time it's on.

If it hadn't been for the mother that's, probably, exactly what would have happened.
It looks like Bridezilla's on Monday. Cake Boss is on TLC from 7:00 pm to 3:00 am on TLC.
As for their prices, this is from their web site:
What is the price range for specialty and wedding cakes?
Any specialty cake is priced per person; basic butter cream cakes start at $6.00 per person and go up from there. A good rule of thumb is to look at cakes that are featured in any magazines or publications; they are usually priced in the $10.00 to $15.00 range per person. The more elaborate, intricate, and time consuming the cake is, the greater price range you will be looking at.
I?m a bride on a budget. Can I afford one of your cakes?
There are a few tricks of the trade to get a beautiful cake without spending a ton of money. Say for instance, you are having 200 guests. We can make you a 3 tier cake that would feed 125 people, and give you a ?back up? sheet cake on the side that will be cut in the kitchen so that your guests won?t even know, as opposed to getting a 5 tier cake that would actually serve 200 guests. Basically what this means is if this cake was priced at $10 per person, instead of paying $2,000 you would be paying $1,250 plus the cost of the sheet cake (an additional $150) therefore saving $600. As long as you don?t mind seeing a smaller cake, this is a great way to get a more detailed cake while staying within your budget.
Finally caught this the other night. People that can do this simply amaze me. True artists.
On the episode I saw they were going to deliver a cake for a Sweet 16, the guys were maneuvering a staircase, the cake tilted, and the top few layers went flying down the steps. Fun times!

I watch this every once in a while, but I hate how staged everything is. The bitchy bride just happened to be standing next to a dozen pastry bags filled with neon icing? A cake falls down the stairs during transport when they always use the elevator? (they must have made two for the show) It's a fun show, but it's too much of the same old-same old sometimes. Buddy loses his temper. Mama is a saint. The sister is a bitch. Stretch screws up a delivery. I'm also sick of hearing about "royal icin' and "dirty icin'!" And that Donnie Darko bunny cake scared the crap out of me. Easter bunnies aren't supposed to be threatening looking!
My favorite cake decorating show is Amazing Wedding Cakes. Buddy is very talented, but he's got NOTHING on Christopher Garren! Check out his gorgeous creations:

I love everything he does.

I caught that show Saturday. His team did a cake of the Chrysler Building. From what I could tell, he didn't contribute a thing, except to tell them to make it taller! It was gorgeous, though.

I watch that one as well. I have a thing for shows about weddings and cake decorating.
I saw a rerun of the Food Network Challenge and Buddy was on it. He did win.

I don't watch the show for the cake designs, though I'm tempted to say they're the icing on the cake (sorry!). I watch for the family dynamics. Gotta love big, fussin' and lovin' Italian families.

While a lot of the drama is scripted, I do believe they're a close, loving family.
