Well, it's 'beautiful' from a distance. Evacuations are up to an estimated 10,000 at this point. In the last hour or so, the smoke has thickened and completely blanketed us now - and we're 40 miles away! With no wind, the fire is expanding in all directions over very rough terrain - so there's little chance to combat it at this point.
Ugh.

We're not threatened by the actual fire, but the smoke is pretty icky. Whatever we do today will be indoors! D2 has friends in that area, and I don't think they've heard from them
The scary thing to me is the no wind/0% humidity conditions - which are frquently a precursor to Santa Anas. Since this thing is spreading almost exponentially - and basically unchecked, at this point - if the winds from the high desert kick in, they'll blow right across the fire directly into all the communities that it's lining up against. Disaster could really explode at that point.
Sending prayers and good thoughts that it gets contained soon and everyone stays safe.

I just hope they're not still at the emergency room! You know how it can be . . .
We heard from our friends and they're safe. The fires are in the mountains across the valley from their house. They can see it all from their living room but for the time being there aren't any plans for evacuation.
I still haven't heard from my cousin in Palos Verdes, though.
The fire in PV estate has been 100% contained. I read that 6 homes were damaged, but it appears that none were destroyed.
I will keep my fingers crossed.

We were in Pasadena this afternoon, and watched parts of the fire cresting the hill headed down toward Alta Dena - and the flames had to be 150-200 feet high! This is going to take awhile to contain.
Adults!! I have twi pretty epic stories to tell you. My first car accident AND my first time being drunk!! Not so yay!!. . . .and then yay!! for a little bit. . .and then not so yay again!!
Please tell me the accident wasn't because you were drinking and driving!
Glad you're okay!

Morning.
Pretty heavy smoke smell outside - anxious to find out the status of things. There's no wind, and with fires to the east AND west, there's no way of knowing which is affecting us here.
I just heard on the radio that the Mt. Wilson Observatory and the television towers are in danger. And I still haven't heard from my cousin.

Yes, it's still very much out of control. They lost 2 firefighters yesterday
Some good news, though - the Rancho Palos Verdes fire is listed as 100% contained. No casualties, and only 6 structures listed as 'damaged', not 'destroyed'. So, chances are, if someone hasn't been heard from, they are indeed ok.

Girly is having a day like mine. Bad enough on a regular day of the week, but worse on a Monday!
That said, good morning, all!

Crappy Monday indeed! DG, sad news about the firefighters. Many of our good friends are CFD.
The girls had a busy weekend with homework, one week in and C14 is taking high school much more seriously!

So reality set in for C14? That didn't take very long! Does she like the school?

She does like it thus far. She is not in any sports, etc., so does not have the automatic social exposure, but she knows many kids from summer camps and also her sister.

brd - having lived in the mountains of Colorado for years, I'm used to revering firefighters. Where I lived was where the Storm King tragedy occurred a few years ago (14 lost in one horrific flareup.) It boggles my mind that people don't understand the risks and extreme heroism of these folks.

Moony - yes. And here in California, a portion is funded by public donation - which is why it's one of our major contributions every year.
