I remember that going to Ada's on my own was the first 'big girl' thing Mom and Dad let me do... Ride my bike to Ada's and back.
It turns out Ada would call the parents to let them know the child had arrived. And then she insisted that the parents let her know the child returned home safely.
Amazing, when you think about it. Idyllic.
AHH!! Joe Smokes! THAT'S the name of the candy store when I grew up. It just came to me.
Undi, up until 5 years or so ago, the neighboring town still had the place that had the old time soda fountain and it still worked. The name of the place escapes me now, and it's pissing me off, cause that's where my mom and dad first met.
Our fingerprints don't fade from the lives we touch.

Tinfoil...The Terrorizing Terminator
Our store was "Lucy's"...Grandma would send us to Lucy's all the time for 1/2 pound of ham and tell Lucy to cut it TIN !!!(her accent got my sister thrown out of Lucy's once). True story...Grandma sends my sister (not very focused as a child)to Lucy's to ask her what size watt bulbs she has...well God love my sister who walks into Lucy's and says..."My grandma wants to know what size twat you have".....Lucy threw my sister out thinking she was trying to be funny except my poor sister didn't even know what the word meant or that it was bad. needless to say grandma slapped her because she didn't come back with an answer. I still laugh everytime I think of this story.
I hope I didn't offend anyone with that story..just showing how grandma's accent got us in trouble as kids.

Undi - the soda shop makes me think of the counter at Woolworth's! Hot dogs and that syrypy Coke! wow.
Addy - Ada's sounds wonderful.
There was also a five and dime our mom would take us to on rainy days after she picked us up from school. The place had everything in it - treasure hunting for hours, and had a candy counter with a big popcorn machine in front. The whole place smelled of buttered popped corn the moment you opened the door. Another happy memory.
Boobs, that's a great story.
Cheeze, I was just thinking of the counter at Woolworth's!
...which reminds me of the 'pet' department they had there. I used to love going to the back where they had the pets and pleading with my mother that we had to have a hamster or a bird or tropical fish or a puppy or a snake.... I loved that department!

We had Woolworth's! I do remember the popcorn!
Now, I come home and find that the kids have convinced their mother that we needed hamsters!

I think we bought Budgies from the pet department there. Ours had more fish and birds and no puppies. But it was still fun to look at them. The hamsters were always great entertainment.
The Woolworth's in my hometown recently closed. I was sad to see it go...
Kids can be very convincing, brd!
When I was in HS I would meet my cousin and her friends on Journal Square at a store called LISS (like Woolworth's)..we would order fries and egg creams...the best !!!

The old Woolworth's here in San Francisco is now inhabited by GAP. That's progress I think, or at least what they tell me.
Did anyone have a KRESS store? That was Woolworth's main rival, owned by H.R. Kreske. Kreske decided his business needed to expand on the old 5 and 10 industry if it was to survive the ages, and morphed into K-Mart, putting Woolworths out of business.
Hi Adults! I wanted to pop in to wish everyone a Happy Friday and a great weekend! I love all the stories about the old stores that everyone remembers growing up with. Yes, I remember Woolworths, too!
Hi Jungle! It's always wonderful to see you stop by. Hope you have fun plans for the weekend!

Sounds nice Undi! We have a low key weekend. My wife does not feel well - sinus headache. I know that the girls have math projects that must be completed.
Hi Addy, Undi, and All -
My Secretary's Daughter is in her first play this weekend! I'll be attending her performance of "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" tomorrow afternoon. Should be fun! The rest of the weekend is pretty open right now. I'll probably do a little gardening as the weather is supposed to be nice over the weekend. The Wicked tour is Atlanta right now. I will see Julia Murney and company on Tuesday.
Rita was sixteen years... hazel eyes and chestnut hair
She made the Woolworth counter shine
Eddie was a sweet romancer, and a darn good dancer
They'd waltz the aisles of the five and dime
[Chorus:]
They'd sing, "Dance a little closer to me... dance a little closer now
Dance a little closer tonight
Dance a little closer to me... it's closing time
And love's on sale tonight at this five and dime
Eddie played the steel guitar and his mama cried 'cuz he played in the bars
And kept young Rita out late at night
So, they married up in Abilene... lost a child in Tennessee
Still, that love survived
[Chorus]
One of the boys in Eddie's band... took a shine to Rita's hands
So, Eddie ran off with the bass man's wife
Oh' but he was back by June... singin' a different tune
And sportin' Miss Rita back by his side
[Chorus]
Eddie traveled with the barroom bands... till arthritis took his hands
Now he sells insurance on the side
Rita's got a house to keep... dime store novels and a love so sweet
They dance to the radio late at night
Great song, DD.
Sounds like everyone has nice plans! I would love to get out and garden a bit. Maybe I'll be able to do so over Memorial Day weekend.
Hi DD!
Undi - I'll let you - and everyone know - how I like Julia in the role of Elphaba. I've seen Idina and Eden on B-way (and Kristin and Laura Bell Bundy as Galinda). I'm intrigued about Julia and Kendra Kessebaum. I know that Julia has received raves on the tour so far.
*cues Candide's "Make Our Garden Grow"*
oh, I just saw the headline about this... what a wonderful concert this will be!
Caramoor, located in Katonah, NY, will celebrate the enduring legacy of the American Songbook with Bernstein on Broadway, a program that includes Bernstein's most beloved songs and dance music from West Side Story, Candide, On the Town, and Wonderful Town on July 1 at 8 p.m. in the Venetian Theater.

I saw Kendra and she was excellent!
"Love at the Five and Dime" by Nancy Griffith. Love that song.
I'm bumming... I bought tix a couple of weeks ago for Shawn Colvin and Dar Williams at the zoo, and now I don't know where I put the tickets. Went to buy two more tix last nigth, and it's sold out. I've looked everywhere... oh well.
Hiya Jungle!!!
Don't they have records of the purchase, to give you replacement tickets?
Hi DD! Yes, perhaps your original tickets can be replaced after a review of your purchase record. Crosses fingers for you!
