Reader's Digest - the Condensed Book series - AND the Children's Condensed series. We also had many of the Reader's Digest Record Collections.
Loved Readers Digest.
I can't remember the name of the magazines they always had in doctors office for the kids. The would have mazes and stuff like that in them. Anyone?

Thanks DGrant..it was driving me crazy..that's the magazine...I used to love them...only thing that made me not mind going to the doctors.

'Find the hidden items in the picture' was my favorite part.
This has nothing to do with this thread, but i thought it was neat and wanted to share with all of you.

The Four Agreements
BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others.
Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love. Lies will lead to more lies, and lies will cause pain to you and others. What comes out of your brain and heart will go back to you, before you know it.
DON'T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream.
When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.
DON'T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS
Find the courage to ask questions and to exprss what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misundestandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement you can completly transfor your life.
The truth is always the best way to be honest to yourself and others.
ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self abuse, and regret.
Highlights was the best! I just loved Goofus and Gallent. When my kids were old enough to sit up on their own they had a subscription.

I saw this book at B&N, Boobs, and I remember thinking that I hope it sells well.
DGrant doesn't this make you think, especially when you're going through a funk in your life.

There was a thread here about education that ended up boiling down to everyone taking personal responsibility for their existences - that's exactly what I think this speaks to.
By the way, Boobs - we had a crotched poodle thing that covered the extra roll of toilet paper in the downstairs powder room
Poodle...that's funny :)
How about the Cat clock with the moving eyes?

Saw them everywhere - but not in our house. We did have, early on, one of those big metal 'sunburst' clocks in the living room.
We had an ice bowl that had penguins all around the outside - and I found another one at an antique store not long ago - which made me VERY happy since I collect penguin stuff

What about the Aunt Jemima toaster covers?
Anyone have one of those?
Big wide skirt to cover the toaster attached to a black doll with a kerchief tied around its head.
So incorrect now but they were nearly everywhere. They were sold in the five and dime.

Jose' - nope, we always went out for pancakes or waffles - IHOP or The Waffle House!
We had a "sunburst" mirror.
Do I have a penguin mug for you...I call it the Kuma Sutra penguin mug..it's very funny.

Hmmmm, Boobs - that's certainly an attention grabber! It might spoil my vision of them as 'pure' creatures, though.
Anyone like Quisp cereal?
Show of hands for Crushed Velvet. Suit? Curtains? Couch?
oooh - me, me. I loved crushed velvet!
Honey, I'm home!
(how many sitcom dads said that as they walked through the door with their suits still neatly pressed, looking as fresh as when they just left?!)
my reality:
...this day at work was toooo long. And I have to give a speech tomorrow morning at 8am, so...
Calgon, take me away!
I'll be back later for a Kamikaze - so, keep 'em cold!
I loved Quisp and Quake. I didn't think they made them anymore. Do they still make Bosco? That used to taste so good with a Fluffernutter sandwhich.
I stopped by the grocery store on the way home from work, and found myself paying much closer attention to the cereal section than I have in a long time!
I tore myself away before buying Yodels for old times sake.
What about Quangaroos cereal? Remember that? It ahd a horrible fake orange taste. Captain Crunch Peanutbutter cereal?
I had a rust colored crushed velvet suit, pants with matching vest. I thought it was the coolest suit ever and wore it until the crushed velvet wore of and left shiny patches in areas.
Then there was the satin warm up jacket phase and Jox sneakers. Flat pocket jeans. Very impractical becasue you couldn't carry anything in them.
Sasson jeans. Oh La La, Sasson.
We also had powder blue crushed velvet livingroom furniture which my mom thought was the epitome of good taste.

Crushed velvet:
The Fabric of Choice for Partidge Family Costumes:
Red Velvet with white shirts/blouses
Blue Velvet with light blue shirts/blouses
Green Velvet with white shirts/Blouses
later on they added the multi-hued green with the yellow shirts/blouses.
yeah yeah yeah...I remember all that too well and I also remember the birthdays of the singing members of the Osmond Family...

Oh god, Nina, you made me remember our crushed velvet living room set - ours was in blues and greens.
