jrb, awesome.
I find these statistics interesting, considering you can turn on the American news (yes, we get American news here) and hear of two murders a day in upstate NY, then watch the Canadian news and hear of two murders a week in various parts of Canada.
My home town near Toronto had a murder a while back. First one in 10 years. Hmm.
nope that statistic from the fbi crime index of 2001 and from the previously linked canadian state website. but the fbi is surely lying to back me up. after all, they know i'm a republican.
well, to be fair--our news thrives on instilling fear in as many American citizens as it can....

Oh and the American government is also extremely well known for being honest. It's not corrupted in the least.

Oh I'm well aware that the American media is all about fear-mongering, and I feel bad that you guys have to watch that all the time.
But if there is a murder here, we definately know about it. From a bar fight killing to a child murder, it's covered.
there we go, if you don't like a number just claim it's a lie. since there's no way to prove to your exacting standards that it's not, how can you ever be wrong? that's the liberal way of doing things!
sweetie darling papa pants, you and your kind do it just as much. Just because you guys think you are holier than thou, does not make it so.
considering that i live in nyc, yeah, i do. i bet the folks in downtown montreal lock their doors at night too. but just as someone who lives in kansas would not lock their doors or (and i saw this) fear to leave their keys in the ignition, i'm sure you can find places in canada that are that peaceful too.

Oh I'm not flat out saying it's a lie, i'm just suggesting that all things need to be taken with a grain of salt.
Flip back to page one, that's kind of what this whole thread was about back then.
Don't believe everything you read Papa
. I agree, the stats are interesting. Perhaps find a few more sites to back you up if you must. But I just can't shake the reality of it all- it looks fine and dandy on paper- but in REALITY you just don't hear or witness as much crime in Canada on a daily basis as you would in the States. People generally feel safer in Canada.
I live in a city that's the "Jail Capital" of Canada. Just crawling with ex cons. I think one of my doors might be unlocked right now, and I walk home late at night by myself all the time. Call me stupid, but the crime rates here are just not enough to make you live in constant fear.
Judy, Republicans love fear--that's how they pass laws and "elect" Presidents!

Downtown Mtl: lived there for a few weeks to study. Didn't lock my doors all the time.
Downtown Toronto: have plenty of friends down there with unlocked doors.
Downtown Halifax: I'm not even sure they have doors! hehe.
Call us naive or trusting, but we just feel safe. Isn't that what quality of life is all about? You can quote numbers all you like but it doesn't properly reflect the way you live.

jrb, love the quotes on "elect"!!
Didn't the Canadians feel smug when that whole mess happened. We kept gloating that we can hold elections in a day!
well, judy considering that the us is ten times larger than canada...nah, ya can't really compare something like that. i could say that if you were hearing about 10 times as many crimes you'd see it differently, but it's impossible to try to put something like that in perspective.
>> Blue knows that, Papa. He's (if you're a she I'm so sorry) no dummy. And he doesn't have to pretend he's smart either.
Yes, judy_in_disguise is right, I DID know that (I love being defended
). My point was that the so-called "British" army was an army made up of citizens who would be Canadians - it's not like the real British troops sailed over the ocean to defend the colonies. I consider these Royalist troops Canadians because they made their lives on North American soil. Just like US history books appropriate the pilgrims as American. Same deal.
That said, I'd like to point out that it's difficult to use these historical and statistical "facts," only because there is always a much wider and often-overlooked story surrounding the historical information. For example, quoting crime rates ignores questions like "what kinds of crimes?", where, the frequency, the reasons behind them, etc. On the flipside, although I'm proud of the role Canada played in the Underground Railroad movement, I won't deny that Canada also has a few human-rights smudges on its history books, too. Every nation has them, and we could go on for days throwing these things in each other's faces.
What I will say (and something that Michael Moore pointed out in Bowling For Columbine), is that US culture has a deeply-ingrained fear in its social psyche, something that Canada doesn't have AS MUCH. Certainly it's evident when you turn on the TV and watch the format of news programs -- fear of terrorism, snipers, killer-insects, disease, and the general downfall of society. Canadians are much less driven by fear. As well, the US suffers from extreme xenophobia and is less-integrated with the world community.

Yes Blue! Thank you!
And Papa, I understand your 10 times bigger thing. I really do.
But when it comes right down to it. When you're walking down the streets of Chicago and you're 10 times more likely to get killed than if you're walking down the streets of Toronto, that's really what it's all about.
"Elect"...teehee...
My sister lives in Toronto and does not lock her doors. Again, I live in RHODE ISLAND...Crime rate in my town: ZERO...I do not live on the highway or on a busy street...EVERYONEin my neighborhood locks their doors. Americans are DEFINATELY more afraid.
And who can blame them? How would you feel if someone said "There's going to be a terrorist attack, we don't know when, we don't know what, we don't know where, but just to be safe you'd all better stock up on food and Saran-wrap your houses"????
oh, yes, Judy--that's the OTHER thing. A bizarre obsession with SIZE. lol

no wonder you're so good at pissing me off!

like I said Papa, like I said.
You're giving Americans AND mambo a bad name.
And I LIKE Americans...and mambo....and Americans who mambo.
Brush your teeth darling
i have always worn the badge of the "ugly american" with pride and will continue to do so. but since i scrolled back and read your earlier post, i'll give ya sumpin'. my icon is a picture that the chinese government is putting on cigarettes to try to curb smoking.
Broadway Legend Joined: 5/31/04
yeah we do that here in Canada too.
Also, in the city I live in, smoking has been banned in all public places.
Toronto, Ottawa and surrounding cities and towns have just implemented this legislation as well.
The smokers are upset but get used to smoking outside. The non-smokers (especially singers like me!) couldn't be happier.
Yet another reason why it's great (and healthy) to be Canadian.
lol--papa. Like you'd know! I have nothing to be ashamed of!! :)
