I agree, Ida. No one should ever criticize unless they have done what it is they are criticizing better than the people they are criticizing because only the people who have done it have the right to an opinion. So if you haven't DONE it, shut the HELL UP!
I have not made a documentary, but I thought this one was really well done. However, I do get the feeling that some of the "Legend of Carol" is a tad apocryphal. (But I really should not criticize)

I guess you can't argue with that logic.
You make a good a point SueleenGay
I had a nice little surprise with this! They showed an old photo of Carol and the girls in the mid-'50s rehearsing their big "let's put on a show" revue at the Rehearsal Club, and in it you could clearly see my own mom! My jaw dropped. I'd never seen that photo before in my life. I don't think Mom has either. They usually show the one with the handful of flapper girls that ran in the New York Times, as well as Carol's own biography. It made me smile a lot.
I thought the documentary was wonderful. A great use of archival performance clips too. I really wish the old "Once Upon a Mattress" TV version (the first in B&W) would come out on DVD. It appears to be in GREAT condition. And I want the Julie & Carol at Carnegie Hall special too!
I really enjoyed this too, and it's a shame that those gems are not available on DVD. You'd think that the surprisingly high ratings for their reunion special a few years back would have woke some people up to the Carol's enduring appeal.
What a treasure!
Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Saw the special and adored it.
Miss the days of the variety show immensely.

Saw it last night and LOVED it. And the humor still holds up- unlike somethings from 30 years ago. "I saw it in the window" still made me laugh out loud- thirty some years later and fully aware it was coming!
I agree, Joe.
The comedy seemed timeless.
I was thrilled it all still seemed fresh and funny to me.

When you think back on the show, you remember the comedy, the movie spoofs and the hilarious characters that Carol created but, I tend to forget that it was also a showcase for some unbelievably talented performers who made guest appearances. It was so nice to see clips of Carol singing with a legendary jazz vocalist like Ella Fitzgerald and a grand dame of opera, Beverly Sills.
loved it.....
