"Celebrities" Only Famous to People Living in NYC

I miss the skinny blonde feminist who stands on street corners with her card table and yells "Sign the petition" and she holds up a sign about women in porn that shows a woman tied up with ropes. I haven't seen her this summer.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

In the 1980s there used to be a 30-something guy who hung outside the 3rd Avenue entrance to Bloomingdale's. As customers exited or entered the store, the well-dressed man would approach them and very politely with a British accent explain that he had been mugged and his wallet, airline ticket and passport had been stolen and it was going to take the consulate a couple of days to get him a new passport. He would then ask if they could spare some money so that he could get something to eat. I had a friend who gave him five dollars. Several years later she walking up 3rd Avenue and the same man approached her and started giving her the same story -- she told him, "You already got me three years ago. You need a new act." He shrugged and walked off.

This is pretty specific, but when I lived on Christopher St., those in the neighborhood knew my super, Carlos. He was a neighborhood character. You would either find him on the front steps with his parrot named Benny, or having a yard sale out front and selling old, rusted, bent, hammered nails for a dollar, or gossiping, or in my apartment (jealous of all the pretty gay guys who were my friends, lol).

I was surprised to see that Gary the 'Mayor of Strawberry Fields' didn't make the list, or has he dropped off the planet since I was last in New York?

They also left off the wackadoodle South American (?) queen who runs around the city in a wedding dress and top hat with his beard and his poodle tie dyed every color of the rainbow, pushing the poodle in a stroller, parrot on his head and parasol in hand.

Seriously, how did they leave off "Miss Columbia"???

What about the guy who always has a bunch of kittens and guinea pigs on a cart? He sometimes sets up shop in subway stations on the UES. Does anyone else know who I'm talking about? Or was he just a B-lister?

I don't know the kitten guy, but what about Mayor Bloomie's sassy black sign language interpreter?

If we can confine to the theatre district, you have to include that somewhat masculine gypsy woman with three teeth and curly dark hair who always wears over sized pants and shirts and a baseball cap while scalping tickets outside TKTS and various theatres.

I saw some woman in Times Square back in July advertising herself as the Naked Cowgirl. I can't tell from my picture what she has on the bottom half of her body, but I see she has a couple of pasties over her boobs, which do sag. What is her deal? Is she trying to make it seem like she is included with the Naked Cowboy, but really isn't?

The Sign-Language Translator got her 15 minutes during Sandy when she was everywhere. It's like when the real-life Soup Nazi crossed-over onto Seinfeld.

I feel like sports radio caller fixtures like Jerome from Manhattan, Ira from Staten Island, or Doris from Rego Park (RIP) fit more of the 'Only a New Yorker would know who this is' and also being so niche and specific. Mike Francesa is somewhat well-known in terms of really popularizing sports talk radio although he is probably really offended by being considered 'just a New York celebrity'.

How did Yoooooo- LANDA Vega NOT make the list?
I've seen a fraction of these clowns compared to Yolanda...hahhaaa

Thanks - the list was amusing.

Finally got the name for the guy I used to see regularly eating breakfast in the morning at the Port Authority with balls of tin foil all over his head: #27 Wendell the Garbage Man of Union Square

There's a new Yolanda Vega now. This one sounds like a valley girl.
