Part of the problem is that many so-called "Christians" use their religion to promote hate and intolerance.

When I went to church we used to sing "They will know we are Christians by our love." Now it seems just the opposite.

Christians are feeling under attack because the entertainment industry portrays them as anal-rententive freaks, but their response has been to promote hatred and even violence against people who do not share their values.

Examples: Christian groups appearing at funerals of aids victims carrying signs saying "God hates fags." (I was taught God loved all of us and has no hate.)

Christian groups carrying out attacks on abortion clinics and claiming they are above the law because they are saving the unborn. (I was taught that no one is above the law)

Christian groups organizing massive complaints to the FCC to oppose television programming they find offensive. (I was taught that when a program offends me turn it off.)

Christians organizing boycotts of companies that offer benefits to same sex partners. (Ok, unless you work there what possible effect does that have on you?)

Why do Christians feel they have a right to impose their views on non-Christians and people of other faiths? This is NOT what being a Christian is all about and I am ashamed of them!

Now some people are invading the main board with nasty posts about how their way is the right and only way.

It's a choice, I assume, to be homosexual

"It's a choice, I assume, to be homosexual and there's not much I can do to change someone's mind about it."

I will say that engaging in homosexual sex is a choice, just like you have the choice to engage in sexual intercourse or to remain celibate. But we (and I'm talking about everyone) don't decide with whom we fall in love or what attracts us. Being gay is much more than having sex with someone of your gender; there are emotions involved, too. Yes, we choose how we deal with our feelings, but in the end we can't control how we feel.

I wrote this in another thread, but I think it bears repeating: The world is not strictly black and white, therefore I believe that everything in it is a shade of gray, some darker or lighter than others. That goes for sexuality, too.

"...so I'll just shut up.

If only Pat Robertson, Falwell, the Pope, the so called Reverend Phelps, the Muslim extremists and the other crazy religious leaders would follow that advice, the world would be a much better place for everyone to live in.

I am a Christian, and agree with *some* of what peggyandvelma said. I don't agree with abortion, but I am in no way going to tell a woman (or couple) what to do with their lives. If they want to have an abortion, that is their decision. When I say I don't agree with abortion, I mean when my wife gets pregnant (or if I wasn't married and a girl got pregnant by me), I wouldn't want her to have one.

With homosexuality . . . hopefully everyone here knows where I stand on this topic.

With offensive tv . . . Parents need to monitor what their children are watching, or just rent disney movies and let them watch that. I mean I LOVE horror movies and my parents knew I liked horror movies, so they let me watch them when I was younger (when they felt I was able to handle them). Before that, I was forbidden to watch horror/action movies due to the violence.

With that one Baptist church and other fantics like them . . . their judgement will come. I mean, they have a right to do it, but it is an evil thing what they are doing at funerals and teaching their children a gospel of hatred instead of love.

I don't agree with the gay lifestyle... It's a choice, I assume, to be homosexual

PeggyandVelma--with those two statements you are part of the problem.

Now go fix it.

Well, everyone has a right not agree with something. And to her defense, she did say:

"I meant that it's a choice to react a certain way, like you put it, SG2."

Meaning, that she agreed that it is a choice to have sex (which works for homosexuals and heterosexuals).

But the IMPLICATION when people say that sort of thing is "You SHOULD choose celibacy, because it is wrong to be gay. If you were straight, that would be different and you should feel free to go forth and spread that seed, baby; but since you're a big ol' fag, you should never have sex and try to repress these filthy, ungodly, unholy urges to the bottom of your black corrupt soul, and THEN maybe Jesus will love you."

Then again, given that this prattle comes from people who believe the universe was created by a bearded white man who lives up in the clouds and wears a toga, I can't quite move myself to be all *that* offended.

'I don't agree with the gay lifestyle'

whoever asked you to agree with my lifestyle??? You are NOT my God.

, 'and I don't seek out gays to persecute them.'

Gee speaking for all "homosexuals" in the world, THANK YOU.

It's a choice, I assume, to be homosexual and there's not much I can do to change someone's mind about it.

"Again you are NOT my God, what gives you the right to even think you could do anything to change my mind, why would you want to? You ARE part of the problem, just by this statement.

'However, I do hope to understand the homosexual community better. Understanding each other is the key.'

so, you do not understand people? As that's all we are....people.

Please do not veil your bigotry with soft statements.

well, i walked into that one.

which reminds me of the old joke about the woman who puts out an ad advertising that she has the largest vagina in the world and invites people to come explore. one man takes her up on the offer and goes in with a flashlight. not even an hour into his expedition he slips and loses the flashlight. he wanders in the dark for quite some time before bumbling into another adventurer.

"listen, friend, if you help me find my flashlight we can get out of here," he offers.

the other man snorts in reply, "flashlight, hell! help me find my jeep and we'll drive outta this bitch!"

I'm afraid your disgusting and subversive breederific lifestyle is just going to have to get in the Waiting For Acceptance line and take a number.

It is sad that religion, all religions, get bad publicity. You just have to remember that every village has its idiots, and it's the idiots that get the limelight.
