re: Christo Event

It's funny--I've heard that response from so many people here. It seems like it's one of those very specific cultural reactions that an outsider (i.e. le French artiste) couldn't anticipate. New Yorkers have had it up to here (hand over head) with orange safety fencing, cones, barriers etc., and we really do seem to have a negative reaction to the color.

Or, maybe it isn't about having it "up to here", as much as it is having a strong association with the down-and-dirty aspects of construction, which don't evoke an "art" response".

If they are going to call them "saffron", they should have made the effort to MAKE them saffron.

re: Christo Event

Right- I wouldn't call it saffron. And I think it's not just the color that evokes the strong construction connection, but the combination of that color and those beams.

re: Christo Event

I'll be the one to say it....

It's the "out-of-towners" who seem to be attracted to this. Manhattanites are vocally against it, 4 to 1, based on the comments I received/overheard by the end of Day One.

Fortunately, only how many, 16, more days to go?

I'll agree with BTA, wrapping a building would perhaps be less offensive, although I still believe Christo's "art" to be dubious. He's no different than Pirelli selling the Miracle Elixir, in my book.

Yes, it's made Central Park into a construction site.

Ah, the crap one has to endure to live in Manhattan.

No one ever said it was easy.

re: Christo Event

C'mon Jose--if you love nyc (and you must, because everyone with any sense lives somewhere easier to live) you have to love something that packs smiling, happy, free-spending tourists into the City.

And where better to put them than in the park, where they won't get in the way?

re: Christo Event

As someone who only gets the pleasure of visiting your fair city, it saddens me to think that our presense is so intrusive. I can assure you that, at least from our end, we only wish to partake in all the wonders that are unique to that most vibrant metropolis. I suppose we will just have to satisfy ourselves with the extraordinary culture, and try not to feel intimidated by the disdain and antipathy.

re: Christo Event

With me, I don't dislike tourists. I love walking around and spotting someone who's here for the first time - you can see it in their eyes, and how much they love being here, and it reminds me if my first time here. Now living here, sometimes I do get a bit annoyed, but only for logical reasons. And the tourists that generally annoy me are never from the United States. Example: the other night I went to MoMA. Many of the famous paintings don't even have glass around them - and this foreign woman (who didn't speak english) walked right over to one of the pieces and started scratching it with her nail to see what was under it. I almost flipped out. It's not all tourists - not even most of them - but I've seen things like that often enough from people outside the US with absolutely no manners to sometimes turn me off to the idea of visitors not knowing how to behave.

There is a very scathing article on the MSNBC's (Keith Bloggerman) website about this project.

Saffron my ASS. The Time Warner building now looks like a low-budget community theatre from East Bumf*ck Missouri.

re: Christo Event

BTA, I didn't say I didn't appreciate out-of-towners. I said that it appears they, as a group, are more partial to this project than Manhattanites.

The vast majority of Manhattanites, myself included, are from somewhere else, and were out-of-towners once themselves.

I simply find this latest Christo sham deplorable in Central Park.

Wow--I know I was a little flip, but I really didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings: you are all cordially invited to NYC any day any time; we love having you and we're sorry when you leave.

I'm a born and bred New Yorker, and the Gates are stunning. They made me (and everyone else I saw in the Park today) smile. Christo is NOT making any money from this, according to the authorized t-shirt and poster stands set up in the park. The money is going to The Nature Conservatory.

re: Christo Event

I don't understand exactly why people think this project is "deplorable." They didn't harm ANYTHING in the park. It's not like the gates are hammered into the grass. How is it deplorable at all? I do not understand that.

bta - I really didn't think you were all that serious - I was just using a little overstatement to make my point is all. I've grown up and lived where tourists go most of my life, so I know how annoying it can get at times.

It's gorgeous and makes lots of people happy. NY really needed a pick-me-up after the crappy weather this winter.

re: Christo Event

I'm googling "Christo Central Park" right now to see what you guys are talking about, but just to chime in to that comment about it being always the out-of-the-country tourists who piss you off, I just wanted to add that while I can understand your frustration (and frankly, if I saw someone scratching at a work of art, my eyes would bulge), it seems a bit premature to assume that this is a sign of rudeness, as opposed to being a cultural difference where perhaps she did not *know* how to conduct herself and her intent was not to be selfish or inconsiderate.

And it's not just the total foreigners who don't speak English who can be problematic. Having worked at the Vancouver airport and in the tourism industry, Americans (and Canadians) are hardly always the epitome of culture, class, grace and virtue, hmm? While you may not have intended your comments to come off this way, it sounds a bit intolerant with a hint of ethnocentric xenophobia.

re: Christo Event

Yeah... the gates don't disturb anything, and I think they are great. I saw the interview on the 'Today Show' and I believe one of the motivations was the ability of the installation to have contact with individuals. They can interact with the piece, which I think is fabulous.

I am for the Gates even if i think it is ugly. All the money is going to help the City. We need the help and the tourist dollars.
Jose. Tourists pay your salary honey. Embrace it with a smile.
I also hate it, but it is bringing dollars to my wonderful city.
I LOVE NYC.
Now, all your tourists out there. Come to NYC. See the GATES then go see an Off Broadway show and Broadway show.
Just my two cents.
