re: Christo Event

Orange as a color in general doesn't annoy me. It's the shape of this piece (these pieces?) that makes it look, in conjunction with the orange, like the park is under construction.

I'm thinking about going to the gates today. Is there a specific section that I should be heading to?

re: Christo Event

I thought this installation was horrible. I agree with Rathnait that it made the park look like a construction zone. Waste of time and taxpayer dollars.

However, someone I know viewed it from an apartment high above the park and said it was spectacular.

re: Christo Event

SW, are you at all familiar with the park? I would head toward portions that are more hilly rather than flat.

re: Christo Event

The easiest way to get there is to take the 1/9 to Columbus Circle- literally walk towards Columbus Circle and you'll see the hordes entering the park- or take the N/R/W to 57th St- and again walk up to Columbus Circle and follow the masses.

The entrance is Central Park South.

Thanks, I'm going to see what the fuss is about. ALl I keep hearing about is the gates, the gates. I finally broke down and asked someone what they were. When I was watching Regis, he was all "I don't get the Gates". That statement is why I love regis. :)

re: Christo Event

Remember this as you are thinking about it.

The name comes from the creators of Central Park, Vaux & Olmsted. They surrouned Central Park with a stone wall. But every so often they interrupted the wall with gates for entry.

Here is some info from the artists:

re: Christo Event

Those aerial photos make The Gates look kind of cool- like a serpent winding thru the park. But the effect is weak on land.

I do like some of his other projects- especially when he wrapped the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris.

re: Christo Event

it's a little....iffy? i don't know if that's the right word. i don't know if i agree with it - this is, after all, the same pair who wrapped the reichstag in silver fabric and some island in pink fabric.

it does seem a little like a ploy for money, especially since he's doing drawings of it and selling them for up to $800,000. but they are paying for it themselves, or so they say. i don't know, i guess i'm just kind of skeptical about the whole thing. maybe i have the right idea, but then again, maybe i just don't get art.

i think it might be the latter.

re: Christo Event

Dave Letterman was talking about the Gates on Wednesday night. Apparently, the Late Show contacted Christo's people about being on the show and they got really snotty and were like "Do you KNOW how in demand we are?"

So he spent the whole rest of the show making fun of them and it was hilarious. He was talking about something else and he was like "At least it's not highway construction cone orange. No, I'm sorry, SAFFRON."

HAH! I wish I'd seen that.

Ah, Davey, Davey, Davey. Sometimes he can actually be funny.

Went last week. I would say to definitely see it, but it didn't knock my socks off.

I loved Bill Maher's spoof of "Christo, and his famous wife, Jean-Claude".
