So sad that he was engaged with a wedding set for next month.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

So young. We just buried my aunt two weeks ago who died in her sleep at 59. It was awful. We're awaiting autopsy reports, but we are simply dismayed. It just makes no sense to lose someone at this age without an illness.

My thoughts and prayers to all that knew him.

I've been going through a similar thing, drama. A close family friend--someone who was like an uncle to me, really, from childhood on--passed away last month of a massive heart attack. He was also 57 and it was a total shock. He ate well, ran five miles a day, was active, etc. Just goes to show that one genetic flaw can erase decades of good living. It's sad to see people dying so young over things out of their control.

AC -- I'm sorry for your loss. My aunt, too, led a healthy lifestyle; she exercised, ate healthily, was happy and surrounded by loving family.

It's simply unfathomable.

So sorry for both your losses.

One bit of good that can come from incidents like this is to remind us to cherish--actively--each day and each person we love.

It's a lesson worth constantly relearning.

I know people say things like this all the time, Reg, but the experience really did teach me to do that. Thanks for the kind words.

I know--it sounded sappy to me even as I wrote it. But that doesn't make it less true.

I was actually annoyed at someone this a.m., and this thread made me decide INSTANTLY to get over it and write a conciliatory email.

Not to inject my own personal sh*t into this conversation, but not only does something like this teach us to actively cherish each day, but it can also teach us that, in death, we may still have more to give.

I believe everyone should be an organ donor. As someone deeply affected by this recently, I can say that it is an amzaingly healing thing. To know that someone else (or several someones else) is alive and thriving because of organ donation is beyond meaningful.

I couldn't agree more. I'm aware that some people's religious beliefs preclude them from donation, and I respect that, but I believe that every person who is healthy and able to donate should. And when I say donate I mean the whole package.

"I'm aware that some people's religious beliefs preclude them from donation"

At my partner's funeral, I stood on the bima (sp??) at the synogogue and said, 'I understand people have religious beliefs that make them not become donors. You need to get over them.'

There is no conception of God that I can imagine who would be upset with anyone giving a heart to someone else. As an atheist, the closest I ever came to acknowledging a God was when I found out that David's heart wouldn't stop beating just yet. And it's still going strong 7 months later.

I'm set to donate anything I have, and I hope I will be strong enough to donate if, god forbid, anything ever happened to my children. (Which, just made me tear up thinking about.)

My partner was actually the recipient of a double corneal transplant when he was in his 20's. So...it was very easy for his parents and I to come to the decision that we would donate his organs. I know, for them, it also was profoundly healing.

You don't know the number of people I've told how important it is to know that four other people get to say 'I love you' to others for a short or lon) while longer because of David. In a horrible, awful situation, it has let me find joy.
