i'm TOTALLY OBSESSED with her version of ANYONE CAN WHISTLE!
She's a brilliant vocal talent.
I'm in the mood for Drood.

Her Sondheim album is one of the best. I've always wanted to do a Youtube video of Bette Davis clips underscored with Cleo's "Ah But Underneath".

thank you for psoting that vid!
her voice reminds me of Sarah Vaughan's, she got that warm & honeyed sound...but with an extra touch of kindness & elegance.
(*not* to say Sarah Vaughan wasnt kind or elegant!)

One of my favorite recordings EVER (and one I've shared with a couple of people here!) is one she did with Dudley Moore, who was a good friend of hers. It's mostly standards, with just a couple of originals thrown in for good measure.
That four-and-a-half octave range could do wonders!
If you are just now discovering the brilliance of this amazing woman you are in for real treat. Sublime.

Cleo Laine & James Galway (w/ Boston Pops) - ANYONE CAN WHISTLE / LO! HEAR THE GENTLE LARK
THANK YOU for posting that DROOD video, PalJoey
Nice way to start the weekend
Ms Laine is fabulous and Princess Puffer was her best IMHO.
Don't quit while you're ahead
I saw her twice on stage, and she was fantastic both times!
Once in "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" on Broadway (perfection!), and once as The Witch in the L.A. company of "Into the Woods." Her renditions of Stay With Me and The Last Midnight were superb.

Gorgeous! Love her.
Does no one else find her rendition of EVERYBODY SAYS DON'T to be so spectacularly over the top that you can't help but fall out at the last note??
It's genius.

btw, her rendition of Last Midnight is posted "you know where"
I saw her in a production of Show Boat in 1972, I think it was. She was wonderful. That entire production was wonderful.

well dang, today i *REALLY* miss Tower Records...i used my lunch hour to run to BOTH Virgin Megastores to look for some more Cleo Laine, but they both only had the same "best of" collection.
I saw her play Desiree in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC many years ago in Detroit. She was wonderful.
I've also seen her many times in concert with her husband--James Galway. She's always been a favorite of mine.
Once again, Norn, you show exquisite taste!
I have some of her early vinyl LPs. If you can find a copy of I Am a Song, which was also released on cassette, I highly recommend it. It's one of her many collaborations with John Dankworth and illustrates what an ideal combination they are, given the woodwind-like timbre of her voice. I especially like the title track, It Might As Well Be Spring, and Thieving Boy.
