re: Cleo Laine

I grew up listening to Cleo Laine (70's) lps. One of my favorites is a silly song called "Control Yourself." I'll post a "you send it" link later tonight.

re: Cleo Laine

Oops. I knew Dankworth is her husband. I always get that confused as Galway and her have performed together so often...

As Puffer, she campaigned for my section of the mezz to vote for her in Drood!

As her Drood co-star, George Rose, once said...

"...an embarrassment of riches."

Puffer:
Once I bet me last ten pence - and won
Twice as rich then, friends said, "Call it done!"
"How sad", I said.
"So that's your wildest dream, eh, then...
Twenty pence instead of ten?"
I doubled up my bet again!

In life you start the same as when you're done:
If you lose, you're just where you've begun -
If you win, don't quit while you're ahead,
Just press your blessed luck instead!...

re: Cleo Laine

Woooow! Norn- once again a beautiful illustration! You really captured Miss Laine. I remember her being on a lot of talk shows when I was a kid- especially Mike Douglas. Thanks for sharing your wonderful artwork! mom

re: Cleo Laine

Norn, that is just perfect!
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

Bill

Words by P.G. Wodehouse & Music by Jerome Kern
As performed by Cleo Laine

I used to dream that I would discover
The perfect lover someday,
I knew I'd recognize him if ever
He came 'round my way.
I always used to fancy then
He'd be one of the God-like kind of men
With a giant brain and a noble head
Like the heroes bold
In the books I've read.

re: Cleo Laine

i'm reading Cleo Laine's autobiography & im enjoying it so much!
the more i learn about her, the more i love her!

she writes in a friendly manner; clever, charming, very funny...& *EXTREMELY* self-depreciating!
sometimes it makes me sad how often she puts herself down, but maybe thats something i identify with in her.

she came from screaming horrible poverty; most jazz musicians do, but british poverty sounds much scarier than american poverty! & during the war, no less!

& not only the financial poverty but of imagination & possibilty as well; when she told people that she wanted to be a singer, they would laugh as if she said she wanted to live on the moon. women were supposed to be married off & have @ least one baby by the time they were 17.... & in fact, she *did* go that route; marrying a man she didnt care about just to get out of her mother's home & because "thats what girls do".

the moment that she realizes that she is meant for something more in this world is when she hears Nat King Cole's NATURE BOY for the first time, falls in love with it, practices it, & sings it to her first husband...& he responds by saying, "why would anyone ever wanna hear a SAD song?!?!?"

that was the push she needed to begin to take her music & life seriously; going on auditions, educating herself in used bookstores & libraries...& then landing a gig with the Johnny Dankworth Seven. with them, she would learn serious music theory & much later, find true love with John Dankworth himself.

i think Cleo & John Dankworth would make a great subject for a documentary...how two very creative perfectionists not only live together, but inspire & drive each other to achieve MORE in life!
& they *both* turned 80 this year!

i am so glad to have found out about Cleo Laine! even though i'm just beginning to learn about her vast body of work, i already feel so enriched! i dont know how i got so far along without finding her music!
