Posted: 5/10/05 at 10:05pmGreat pic. I read the play. It's boring. Didn't really see the movie, even though I'm a huge friend of Jude.

Did you PJ? It's not that I thought it was boring, I just...totally didn't get their love triangle or suqare or whatever that was....... Natalie Portman's character is all sad throughout the movie because she got dumped and when she gets her man, in one second she says "I don't love you anymore"
And everything else between Julia Roberts, Clive Owen and Jude Law.....
Captain Obvious, huge FRIEND of Jude Law or huge FAN?
p.s. I've seen Jude's other films and thought he was GREAT, but in Closer, that one scene in Clive Owen's office........
(p.s. this isn't meant to start a huge fight with you PJ, since I know that's usually how fights start on BWW...just pointing out an opinion)

Posted: 5/10/05 at 10:17pmWhat was cool about the Broadway play was that after every scene, they just pushed all the furniture to the back of the stage. So by the end of the show, the stage was cluttered with furniture. It was an interesting metaphor for their lives.

Don't worry about it Sally. These are called opinions. They aren't always accepted in these parts by everyone, but that's just how some people are.

Posted: 5/10/05 at 11:48pmI really enjoyed this film...It was really different than what I expected it was going to be though. I thought everyone's performances were amazing. Especially Natalie Portman and Clive Owen.

Posted: 5/11/05 at 6:45amThe play was better, but I loved the movie, too. I put it as #6 on my end-of-the-year Top 10 list.

Posted: 5/11/05 at 8:05amOne of the worst scripts I've ever seen. Performances were fine in the film -but I couldn't care less about any of the characters and I don't know ANYONE who says "f*ck" that often - simply a vulgar and unnecessary film.

Posted: 5/11/05 at 8:08amI love the play so much I can't believe Patrick Marber butchered it so much for the screen. Was not impressed by the movie.

I *LOVE* this film, and the play as well. I just appreciate Marber's stripped-down, raw language, as profane as it is.
Loved Portman and Owen, so-so about Jude, and felt Julia Roberts was in waaay over her head (but still probably the most honest work she's done). I wish Cate Blanchett could have stuck with the project (she got preggers)- she would have been far superior to Roberts.
And I actually know a limited number of f***ed up people who live their lives like this- ripping others' lives apart. Thank God I don't associate with them whatsoever.

No, you're not. I didn't like it either. All of the characters were repulsive and the love triangle was uninvolving. While Portman managed to get a nomination for this (no one will admit it, but she was better in "Garden State"), I believe that Owen and Roberts were the best ones in the film.

Posted: 5/20/05 at 3:01amJust watched it on OnDemand. Had to watch it in two parts... wasn't really keeping my attention, which doesn't necessarily mean it's bad... I thought it was ok. It's strange to watch a movie with no one to root for. Some parts struck a bit close to home, as I'm going through a non-very-amicable break-up myself, especially the "leaving someone you love" line. I also, in some strange way, totally understand why Natalie's character leaves him, even though she prolly does love him... she's all about fooling others, and she can no longer fool him. And I hate to admit it, but I am prolly one of those people that says f!&k that often...

Posted: 5/20/05 at 3:38amI loved it aside from the fact that I hate Julia Roberts with all my being. Yet, I thought all the performances were great and the movie as a whole was engaging and just very well done.

Posted: 5/20/05 at 10:34amThis movie was good. There are people out there like this and there are people in relationships just like the ones depicted in this film. I don't believe you're supposed to actually "care" for anyone in this movie. Every character as in real life has a flaw in this film. It's not a fairy tale, it's showing you the underside of relationships...warts and all. I think it was very well made and acted. Never read the play, didn't even know it was one before this thread. Natalie Portman showed some guts in her role. I loved it.

Posted: 5/20/05 at 10:36amI'm starting to think it's one of those movies that as time passes and let it sink in, I'll like it a lot more. I already like it more than I did last night. And it was interesting to see Julia Roberts play such a part...
