Posted: 6/23/08 at 8:17amAs a friend pointed out, it was somewhat comforting that he remained as cynical as ever the older he got. That usually NEVER happens, at least in my experience.

Sad news, I'm sorry to hear it.
I never thought he was funny though.

Posted: 6/23/08 at 9:17amI always found it somewhat ironic, that he was only funny in the early part of his career, when he was a "straight", somewhat family oriented comedian. The days he felt he was "selling out". When he became "edgy", and certainly more infamous, he also became unfunny. He was always quite clever, though. At least to me, anyway. R.I.P. George Carlin.

Posted: 6/23/08 at 9:28amI felt the same way about him. I used to laugh till I cried over those early routines (ie the Hippy Dippy Weatherman) but I was never a fan of the crude humor. I did appreciate the irony and wit though.
A click for life.

I find it interesting that George Carlins death is affecting me more than Tim Russerts did (whose deification on NBC is getting old). When he went from his bland family oriented material to his more biting comedy, it was pure genius.
"Well, if crime fighters fight crime and fire fighters fight fire, what do freedom fighters fight? They never mention that part to us, do they?"
"If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little."
"Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that."
"Religion has convinced people that there’s an invisible man…living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten specific things he doesn’t want you to do. And if you do any of these things, he will send you to a special place, of burning and fire and smoke and torture and anguish for you to live forever, and suffer and burn and scream until the end of time. But he loves you. He loves you and he needs money."
" Bush wants us to cut the amount of gas we use.
The best way to stop Using so much gas is to deport 11 million illegal immigrants! That would be 11 million less people using our gas. The price of gas would come down. Bring our troops home from Iraq to guard the border. When they catch an illegal immigrant crossing the border, hand him a canteen, rifle an some ammo and ship him to Iraq. Tell him if he wants to come to America then he must serve a tour in the military. Give him a soldier's pay while he's there and tax him on it. After his tour, he will be allowed to become a citizen since he defended this country. He will also be registered to be taxed and be a legal patriot. This option will probably deter illegal immigration and provide a solution for the troops in Iraq and the aliens trying to make a better life for themselves. If they refuse to serve, ship them to Iraq anyway, without the canteen, rifle or ammo. Problem solved."

damn. not a single conversation between my best friend and i goes by without at least one george reference. we were setting up his wedding reception and riffing through the routines. it was the first time i met his wife to be and she heard us and commented, "you really are twins from different mothers."
i hope you're somewhere pointing out the flaws in that place and as you always did pointing out the things that folks there all share.

I was fortunate enough to see him perform a few years ago in Houston. A lot of times I am disappointed when I see the greats perform later in their careers, but this certainly wasn't one of them. RIP.

He played often at the casinos in SoCal, so I got to see him frequently. I love that he performed right up til the end.
His voice, and willingness to speak out, will be missed. Terribly.
And I'm STILL looking for places to put my stuff!

George is (was?) my boyfriend's favourite comedian. We missed him the last time he was in town (in January) with the promise that we would "catch him next time". I don't know how I'm going to break this to him.
RIP George.

Posted: 6/23/08 at 1:00pmSuch sad news. A wonderful genius mind. My favorite routine will always be "Ice Box Man" (from "A Place For My Stuff") Any one who has ever had to clean out the 'fridge can relate! May he rest in peace, and good thoughts and prayers to his family.

His stand-up was brilliant, and I loved him in "Outrageous Fortune" and "The Prince of Tides".

Posted: 6/23/08 at 3:17pmWe talked about his "Seven Words" routine in some of my broadcasting classes. He was really funny. I remember he hosted the very first episode of "Saturday Night Live." I think they should reair it as a tribute to him. I know they showed it once a couple of years ago when NBC was still doing the late night reruns.

Al Sleet in his weather report saying radar was picking up some thundershowers. Radar also picked up a group of Russian ICBM'S so not to sweat the thundershowers
His early albums are on CD but may be out of print by now.
