No matter how cynical or dark he got in his subject matter, he never seemed angry or mean-spirited. That was the key, I feel.

Yeah, that's what separated him from most of the others. He was so crude, but you couldn't help but like him.

From what I remember he was never a fan of re watching the first episode of SNL the one that he hosted. This is because he was (he said he was) very high the entire time and it came off with him looking like a big mess.
