re: Common Misconceptions...

hmm, I knew most of these having had a Tasmanian (now Victorian) penpal for 30 some years....But I never heard of a Numbat.

A former roommate was the zookeeper for the Koalas at the San Diego Zoo.........she came home one night with a two inch gash under her eye from one of those cuddly, sleepy koalas.......
She would not tell me what had happened.

great post paradox, thanks!

Don't even get me started on common misconceptions about Costa Rica in general...

Wow, fantastic thread. The description of the Tasmanian devil's eating habits were a little much before lunch, but at least there were no photos of it.

I believe this thread was in response to my comment, and good thing to because I LOVE this thread.

People commonly mistake Mel Gibson as a good actor...He's australian...that counts right?
So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life.~Office Space

I love you P_E. re: Common Misconceptions...

My best friend had two sugar gliders as pets. They were the cutest things I've every seen. I believe one of them shat on my brother. I loved the little creature ever since.

We definitely are the worst with misconceptions. Common sense is not something America is known for.

I want a glider. Anyone feel like buying one for me?

I believe they are actually illegal to have in the U.S. Or you need a certain permit to have one.

There's more to come!

And yes, this was in response to StickthePriest referencing a wombat, and then admitting he had no idea what they were...

And my friend's mum was the Official Millie the Echidna at the OG. I loved those guys...

We have MANY rare seaturtles in Australia. The Loggerhead, the Green Turtle, Leatherback...

And Flowery, I actually KNEW about the Opossum...

re: Common Misconceptions...

Oh yes, here in the States we have many opossum's... you find them frequently in the middle of the road. Especially in the South- my lovely homestead- my uncle actually used to refer to my cousins and I as "them durn opossum's"... this thread is extremely cool.

Animal #12:

The Kookaburra.

The Kookaburra, or Laughing Bird, can be found all over Australian continent. They are known for their loud raucous call, which sounds reminscent of a high-pitched laugh.

As far as birds go they are quite amazing. They are very strong, and often will catch and eat largish snakes.

Unfortunately they are very loud, and love to sing outside my window at 5 am in the morning...

re: Common Misconceptions...

We used to sing a kookabura song in elementary school...

Kookaburra Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree
Merry merry king of the bush is he
Laugh Kookaburra, laugh Kookaburra
Gay your life must be

Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree
Eating all the gumdrops he can see
Stop Kookaburra, stop Kookaburra
Leave some gums for me

Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree
Counting all the monkeys he can see
Stop Kookaburra, stop Kookaburra
That's no monkey, that's ME!!!

We sang that too! It was nice and bouncy- good for elementary school students right after lunch (which I believe is when we had music). Wow, I haven't thought about that for awhile.

Animal #13:

The Dingo

The Dingo is Australia's largest Carnivore, and is currently suffering from rather bad press. Ever since Lindy Chamberlain, mother of baby Azaria, appeared on international television crying "a dingo ate my baby" there has been problems for it. (btw, Lindy Chamberlain WAS imprisoned for murder, but was later acquitted, as she should have been).

The only pure blood population of Dingoes in the world live on the World's Largest Sand Island, Fraser Island. However, everytime someone is bitten here (and it's a popular tourist spot) the entire PACK is hunted and culled. Unfortunately, this is continuing, as people insist on feeding the dingoes. The dingoes have become dependant on being handfed, and will become aggressive if not given food.

Another major problem plaguing dingoes are the wild dos in Australia. The dingoes freely breed with them, and this dilutes the purity of their ancestry...
