Does anyone believe "Until It Happens to You," content and worthiest of causes aside, is really a memorable song? Or one of Warren's best? Conflating cause and artistry doesn't always work, no matter how much we root for the synergy. On the other hand, the designated winner was like a buried also-ran on a George Michael (or Wham!) album, particularly as performed by the Michael-like clone.

It never ceases to startle me when people on this board use "old" (or middle aged) and "gay" as their go-to insult.

Reg, I understand. Without living through the worst of the AIDS crisis and under the cloud of knowledge that you were probably going to die young, they have no idea what a luxury "old" really is.

She keeps a low profile anyway. The Caitlyn Jenner, Private Citizen route isn't for everybody.

Sam Smith's win/acceptance is even more cringey after reading Anohni (Antony And The Johnsons)'s thoughts.

That really does suck and makes me a bit angry (though at the producers, not Sam Smith). Also, I notice she uses the word transgendered several times in the post; I'm pretty sure I've been told repeatedly that that's a word to be avoided. :)

Yikes! Oscar Ratings Hit 8-Year Low

Well, just going by what a ton of people on Facebook were saying last night during the show, they were kind of getting sick of being "scolded" and how uncomfortable it got at points, so they changed the channel. Plus like so many people have said, it wasn't really that exciting a year in film so there was no one or two movies that people were just dying to see win as many awards as possible.

I figured that was coming. If you think Hollywood has a disconnect with minorities and diversity, it's only equaled if not exceeded by the disconnect between what Hollywood perceives as "good" vs. what the public perceives as "good."

Three of the four acting winners were people that most of the public hasn't heard of in films they didn't see and probably never will see.

It's a big-budget Independent Spirit Awards now, where small films are acquired by big studios at regional festivals for distribution to an Elitist Screener's Club, and the public at large (which like it or not is the reason these awards were created to begin with) isn't interested.

Did Smith just now crawl out from under a rock and join the business? I wish him and the ghost of Howard Ashman luck.

But wouldn't that be some sort of "gender specific transphobia" or whatever the millennials currently call the usage of pronouns?

I think it might be best for Sam to just enjoy his Oscar and not talk to the press for a while- or at least until he learns to Google.

How do you determine what the public perceives as good? Almost everyone thinks Spotlight is good.

But they become interested once the movies start winning awards. Just like with the Tonys, an Oscar win (or even nomination) means more revenue. So it's good for the movies, if not for ABC.
