I'm about as Christian as they come, but I still can't figure out these people who want to teach creationism. It's a four-second lesson plan, really. No religion goes into detail of HOW God created the universe, just THAT He created the universe. I'm still waiting for these creationists to present a syllabus or lesson plan about creationism, but none have bothered so far.

Very sad day. The liberal anti-god groups are taking over. I fear for my country and fellow christians.
Your country went down the creek when Bush ran for Governer of TX.
Thank God!

"I fear for my country and fellow christians."
You'd have less fear if you took your heads out of the sand - it's not so dark out here.

My sister is a biology teacher in Kansas, she will be happy, but I am certain that this nonsense never entered her classroom!
"Incumbent conservative Connie Morris... had described evolution as 'an age-old fairy tale' and 'a nice bedtime story' unsupported by science."
The same could be said about the Bible.

The Bible is supported by faith. Evolution is supported by science.
I meant the terms she used: "age-old fairy tale" and "nice bedtime story."

I am a Christian and I believe in evolution. A lot of people don't think that's possible, not sure why...
so....any guesses as to whose sock-puppet RightAmerica is? And for a real laugh, read its profile.......
I've always thought of the bible as a nice way to live your life, and maybe a history book. And the character of God is just that - a character. If there's a real God, I haven't met him.
Becky, the issue is not that Creationism could be taught as a viable theory, it's that it would be used as the counterargument. In other words, you could spend hours and hours lecturing on how the Bible could otherwise "disprove" theories of evolution.
Meanwhile, nothing about the theory of evolution in ANY way discredits theories of creationism and that argument is reactionary.
For conversation's sake, here is the website for a group of scientists who are trying to prove creationism.

As their first paragraph shows ("We believe God has raised up ICR to spearhead Biblical Christianity's defense against the godless and compromising dogma of evolutionary humanism."), they're pretty biased, but they might have some good points.
What do you think?
There is, apparantly, hope for the world.
I am Christian as well. That doesn't mean I can't accept that evolution occurs (I don't believe the Bible needs to be taken word-for-word literally 1,000% of the time). And, even if I chose to believe otherwise, such an important part of science DOES belong in the science classroom. My religion does not.
Christianity should not be taught in a public school science class. It's not that difficult to comprehend why.
As for the ICR, any organization that claims to be "scientific" but begins their process by forming a conclusion, and THEN looking for evidence/observations that supports their claims are NOT using the scientific method. You're supposed to analyze evidence and make observations, and then form a conclusion based on that. Not the other way around. Besides, creationism is NOT testable. There is no way to prove or disprove it. It's silly to make a charade of doing so.

I heard of it but my friends refused to tell me what it was, what is the one-line definition of creationism?
God, in his holy-ness, created everything.

So do they have classes like
'And who invented the light bulb?'(teacher)
- 'God, miss.'(pupils)
'And who discovered the New World?'(teacher)
- 'God, miss.'(pupils)
'And who started BWW?'(teacher)
- 'God, miss.'(pupils)
??
It seems like that episode of the Simpsons with 'The Leader'. Is that creationism?
In their world, yes. But, strictly speaking with creation (ie, Genises), there's no science. There's no Big Bang. There's not Evolution.
Everything was made just like it is right now.

Things were always this bad? And here was me thinking we needed to go back to the way things were in the good old days.
I'm a big believer in teaching EVERYTHING. Teach evolution, teach creation, and teach the third thing that doesn't want to be remembered right now.
I had a great world geography teacher. The last six weeks was all about religion. We learned about EVERYTHING.

Cool. I have a few very different teachers. My Latin teacher (yes, i do Latin, I'm a weirdo) says 'Oh, the Romans believd in this,' and 'The Romans said that', but then says 'But of course today we know that that's not true'. What's that about? In 500 years or so they'll all be saying 'Hey where those guys 500 years ago gullible or what? Democracy, ha! What a myth'. On the other hand, my Irish teacher is really open minded, and really can communicate with the students, kinda weird considering he's in his forties. There are teachers in their 20s who can't do that.
I had a geometry teacher that swore aliens built the Egyptian pyramids. She didn't have an excuse for the South American ones.
