re: Creeped Out By Travolta in Hairspray

Have any of you SEEN the film? No? Then you can not say ANYTHING negative about it. Not ONE WORD! (According to Marc Shaimin, anyway.)
PEACE.

"I'm with you, Jane. Divine was simply, well, divine. I'm a big fan of the original film, and when I first saw it I didn't realize it was a woman"

But it wasn't a woman! that's how good Divine was.

It is all about his eyes! They are too close together. With the added face mass, it makes it worse. His Edna looks too young, if that makes any sense. He needs a beehive or something and some grey. Maybe we just haven't seen any shots pre makeover. It just seems like there is something else that I can't put my finger on. Once Divine and Harvey have played a role, it's hard to fill those pumps!
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

That's what I said JG! We always think alike.

Jane, I meant "didn't realize it WASN't a woman."

So, will Travolta be playing the dual role of Arvin Hodgepile?

The picture of him that used to be on the front page creeped me out as well. His face looks like a potato.

Have you kids heard the Uncanny Valley hypothesis?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_Valley

I wonder if we're getting that happening here. I know that 'Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within' was a deeply uncomfortable film for me to watch because of this (too real-looking for my brain to accept as fake, but too fake-looking for my brain to accept as real), maybe Travolta-as-a-woman is just not quite close enough to "fully human" for us to accept...

He creeps me out, too. But I'll still see it.
One time, Patti LuPone punched me in the face...

It was awesome.

it really creeps me out, but so does Christopher Walken...

I'm gonna be dragged to the movie anyway.

re: Creeped Out By Travolta in Hairspray

The pictures don't look good, a bit too puffy, but hey! I'm really looking forward to this movie, so let's wait and see.
And as for that fake Southern accent, have any of you ever been to Bawlmer? One of my big complaints of the Broadway show is the mispronunciations of Baltimore (the t is silent).
Baltimore is a mix of North and South, the best of both worlds culturally, and great seafood too!

Sarah Vowell said that visiting Baltimore makes you understand where John Waters comes from with his films.
"[Gore] was widely perceived as arrogant. If you know something, you're not smart. You're a smarty-pants. It's annoying. People get annoyed with your knowledge. It goes back to high school, to not doing your homework ... 'There's something I should know, I don't know why I should know it but someone knows it and I don't. So I'm going to have to make fun of him now.'" -Sarah Vowell, The Partly-Cloudy Patriot

Here's how I feel: Yes, he looks creepy, but I was expecting him to from the moment I heard he was cast. And the accent is pretty spot on according to my dad who lived in Baltimore for 7 years. He is defiantly doing a different take on the role, and I won't say if that's a good thing or a bad thing since I haven't seen the movie. Judging from the promos ans such I think that the movie should be good. The rest of the cast looks pretty fab. I love the look of the movie, it makes it feel like the 60's. Travolta's creepiness will not keep me away from the theater on July 20th.

Yet I see Edie Gorme...

...Or maybe, in this case, a new drag queen, "EATY GOURMET".

I find it ironic (and not in an amusing way) that you are all ripping on JT's appearance in this film - a film which one of the major messages is tolerance and to not judge people by appearances. Mock who you will... it's petty.

Especially when you consider some people who have had sensitive reactions to criticisms of their appearance in official photos and the like. At least JT's Edna isn't wearing glasses in the stills.

Everytime I pass a bus stop with a Hairspray movie poster I think, wow, I never thought I'd see this. I'm looking forward to it.

Namo, your obsession grows more and more pathetic. Don't bother denying it.

I never said a thing about Travolta's appearance, I was lauding Auggie for coming up with "Eaty Gourmet" - a great drag name. Pay attention before you post.

re: Creeped Out By Travolta in Hairspray

I't all my fault. I'm a notorious fat phobic, particularly when the fat isn't from too many Blizzards at the DQ, but is instead made of thousands of dollars of rubber foam and applied to a Scientologist. But I will also be there, opening weekend, and pay my money, full price, unless I get into a bargain matinee. In the meantime, I'm slightly Travolted, as is my right; hey, it's America.

That wasn't an "official" photo. It was taken by an unauthorized photographer, and posted here without authorization.

As you well know.

btw, that chin comment - was that fat bashing?
