My wife wants to open an Only Bundt store, and I point to the end of the cupcake craze as a reason to avoid fad franchises.
Their employees got their termination notice by phone. Thought the law was 60 days notice.

I'm surprised cupcakes are still in. A while back, they said that cupcakes were out, and pies were in. that didn't work out, and cupcakes are still around.
I hated going to Crumbs becaause they sold Starbucks Coffee which I dispise. There is a Starbucks on almost every corner where we can get that disgusting burnt bean taste.
I never tried BAKED BY MELISSA but I can't understand why anyone would want a cupcake the size of a quarter that costs a buck.

Crumbs was like Krispy Kreme in NYC. They expanded too quickly and didn't have the clientele they thought they would have.

For some reason, people bring in Baked by Melissa to work all the time. They're sugary nuggets of mediocre quality...BUT the feature is you can get a quick sugar fix with far less calories than a Magnolia cupcake.
I'm stunned by the sturm und drang happening on my FB wall about Crumbs closing.

I've always appreciated Howard Ashman for using "sturm and drang" in Little Shop Of Horrors.
Now back to our regularly schedule programming.
Nothing is forever.
If they ever close the cronut place, I will expect nothing less than mass suicides.
It's so odd--Crumbs is described as "ubiquitous' in the OP's linked article, and a number of posters allude to their over-expansion--suggesting there are a lot of them.
I swear, I can't think of a Crumbs that I pass regularly except for when I visit a friend who lives in Hoboken, where they have 1 on their main street. Their web-site appears to be defunct now, so I can't check to see where they are/were. Somehow, they were invisible to me.
The closing is not that much of a surprise--there was an announcement back in late spring that said that unless things really turned around, they were on track to shut their doors. This year's losses were on track to exceed last year's, which were substantial, apparently.
I might be the only one here who will miss Crumbs. I used to buy the ones that were like Hostess cupcakes, with the white swirls on top and the cream filling. I'd put it in the freezer and when I wanted some, I'd cut a third of it and save the rest for another time. yum!
Ditto to Hostess.
They are like an old friend - there when you need them . They also taste good. Do prefer Little Debbie Hostess knock offs. 8 in a package for $ 3 & you cannot taste the difference.
Never had a crumbs and now can never have one.
Interesting reading all the negative feedback on Magnolia's (in NY, I presume). I wonder if my positive experience - moist, wonderfully densely flavored cake and rich, but not cloyingly sweet frostings - was an anomaly. Or perhaps they're not using the same recipes/methods here in LA.

Talk about your refined taste, Mr Roxy! A class axt!
I won't miss Crumbs because I've never gone into any. Hard to miss something you've never tried.

You're all sexist!

I won't lie. I'd sleep with anyone who offered me a Devil Dog.
Most of my animus towards Magnolia comes from the hordes of 'Sex & The City' tourists, crowding the sidewalk and streets for a 3-block radius around Bleecker/11th well after Carrie & Co had lost any relevance (to me).
They are even more aggravating than the bus-loads (literally) of morons who think that they will bump into Rachel & Monica at the corner of Bedford & Grove. They just take their pictures and move on.
ETA: Just read Goth's linked article: "The kind of woman who watches Sex and the City (an important driver of the cupcake trend) and takes the bus tour to Magnolia Bakery. "
Yep--they've got my number...
That Baked By Melissa is the most hilarious one of all. She was using boxed cake mixes when she started.
Never went to Crumbs, but we had several locations in Chicago all spring up in the Loop very close to each other. I'm in Magnolia a lot. I like their cupcakes better than their cake slices, but neither really wow me. I go there strictly for the banana pudding, which is HEAVENLY. For cupcakes in Chicago, Sugar Bliss is my favorite.
Matt, I was just going to say that the best thing in Magnolia is the banana pudding!
I think they use marscapone and heroin.
