I'm really surprised. I thought they were doing so well- they certainly seem to have a store on every corner nowadays. It's all so sudden too.

They're terrible in my opinion and their expansion was ridiculous and by reports it was a terrible place to work.
Cupcakes have never been my favorite dessert and I don't remember ever trying Crumbs' stuff, but with the way they popped up all over the city in the past few years you would think they were trying to rival Duane Reede and Starbucks.

They died the Steve's Ice Cream death.
Never heard of Steve's Ice Cream. Just checked out their website and some of their flavor combinations sound pretty good. What was the deal with them?

They were a local business that created the mash-in thing. They were super popular and suddenly decided they had to gown and expand and expand until they collapsed.
OMG, I had completely forgotten all about them. When I lived in the Boston area in the early/mid 80's, they were still the hottest thing going. I left the area a few years later and completely lost track of them. But when I was in Arlington, going to the Steve's near Harvard Square was an "event". Hadn't thought of them in 25 years.
I'm surprised their not all closed (Cupcake joints). Most bakeries can make oversized fancy cupcakes. You'd think they would have had the agility to branch our product-wise and embrace the changes in the American diet.

Crumbs error was the oversized cupcakes. People don't need a cupcake that's a quarter the size of an actual cake.
You're all just going to have to come to NJ now

Billy's Bakery is the only bakery in NYC that I'll even consider going into.
The Little Pie Company is my favorite bakery in the city. You can't beat their sour cream apple walnut pie.
The Black Hound bakery in the East Village was another favorite of mine, but it closed down a few months ago.

I like Billy's. Schmackary's cookies give it a run for its money.
Bob, are you sure you're thinking of Crumb's? I thought they were founded in the early 2000s - around the same time as Sprinkles. Perhaps someone else used that name in the 80s.
Anyway, Magnolia's much better.
I don't like Magnolia's cupcakes at all. I've found them to be dry and have a cornbread like taste and texture.
Schmackary's is great. Levain is delicious too, especially because they bake in such small batches that you can often catch a warm cookie right out of the oven.
I should say, I've only tried Magnolia's in LA. And only once, but when I did they were wonderfully moist and, unlike a lot of those other chains, the frostings were not cloyingly sweet.

Having tried Magnolia's cupcakes recently, I was scratching my head as to what the appeal was. They were dry and overall not that good. I honestly thought that the one thing that is keeping them in business is their affiliation with Sex and the City. Other than that, they just weren't that good.
Funny enough on the train ride home that evening, I ran into someone I went to school with. She worked there for a bit and she even didn't like their recipe.
HorseTears, sorry for the confusion. I was actually referring to Namo's sidetrack about Steve's Ice Cream, not Crumbs. Probably didn't make that clear enough in my post. Steve's had a huge cult-like following in the Boston area when I lived there in the 80's.
FindingName - I loved Steve's!!! First had it in Boston on a college trip in the 80s.
Whizzer - I love the sour cream apple pie at Little Pie Company.
Crumbs - blech!! An oversize cupcake that was all sugar and no flavor.

Their cupcakes were too expensive.
Not worth it, either price wise or quality wise.
Same for Magnolia, Schmackery's, Elena's, Billy's, and a lot of these overpriced places around town.
You can buy an individual pack of Vienna Fingers or Lorna Doones for a lot less and and be better off.
As far as cupcakes go, i thought Crumbs were the best. Fabulous flavors, and so big that I would cut them in thirds and have a few treats in one. I'm really sorry to hear this news.
As for Magnolias, tourist trap. I pass there daily and there's always a line down the block. The cupcakes are too sweet and rich.
Little Pie Company? The best!
In a related story about Crumbs on TV, Bowlmor in the village has also closed and will be turned into hi rise condos.Just what we need.
Cupcake Cafe has always been my favorite. Mr. Cupcakes in jersey is pretty good too.
Never been to Crumbs. Love Little Pie Company. They also sell good cupcakes that are not too expensive. Also don't get the hype of Magnolia. I can be bribed with Sprinkles cupcakes though if I can use the cupcake ATM. Things like that amuse me. I think there is one in NYC now. I remember getting excited to visit the only one in Beverly Hills when I was in Los Angeles 2 years ago.
Magnolia sucks. No flavor and dry. Crumbs wasn't much better, though at least they had fun flavors. Little Pie Company is always worth stopping into.
