Addison, I think James is closeted one. Not sure who he is in love with but all the flirting with girls and the things he said on his interview with Carson about his former employer (and conveniently she is out of the country...) and I won't be surprised neither if O'Brien would munch carpet...
I'd like to see O'Brien pay for her misdeeds. Just as I still would like to see Thomas pay for having caused his own injury to get out of battle... but, I think that too much time has passed.
Still, seeing him really suffer was more heart-wrenching than I expected it to be.

It was kind of like Chris Meloni on True Blood. On paper, it seemed like a can't miss, but he was so misused on that. Same with Shirley and this. Maybe next season they'll have figured out what to do with her.
I also found the fault lay somewhat with Ms. MacLaine.
For all that we anticipated a Clash of the Titans between the Dowager Duchess and her American counterpart, Dame Maggie wiped the floor with her. Shirley seemed out-matched and out-gunned.
You think, what do you want?
You think, make a decision...
I also felt that Shirley wasn't quite right for this show. I thought she was trying her best to play the character, but for me she was standing out like a sore thumb.
I blame Shirley's mediocre performance on poor writing. Julian Fellowes didn't think through the character. The audience clearly wanted sizzling scenes between Maggie Smith and Shirley but Fellowes didn't want to overshadow Maggie Smith and therefore didn't give Shirley's character any meat.
I think he should have made Cora's mother a tough Jewish woman. Along the lines of the mother in Fiddler on the Roof. She would come into the gilded environment and the humor would come out of British manners vs American chutzpah.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
I don't feel the character was on long enough for me to feel one way or the other. The way they advertised her appearance they made it sound like she would be on all season.
