Dance Belts
Dance Belts#1
Posted: 7/16/07 at 12:48pmSorry but I don't feel comfortable being a guy and wearing one and dont see the point of them. I'm sticking to boxer briefs under my cargo dance pants-what do other guys think?

Posted: 7/16/07 at 12:53pmAre dance belts those buttless undergarments with a strap and a cup? I bought one for a dance audition, tried it on, and could not wear it for more than a minute. Not only was it uncomfortable, it was PAINFUL. I can't imagine walking, let alone dancing in one.

Posted: 7/16/07 at 12:56pmyeah they are utterly rediculous! thankfully i dont think FSU And UCF check for them!
re: Dance Belts#3
Posted: 7/16/07 at 1:09pmI disagree. I think they are a necessity. It took getting used to but once you do, you will find that they are more comfortable then dancing in briefs or boxers.

Posted: 7/16/07 at 1:56pmNope, I'm straight. I'm just saying that my balls were more uncomfortable and banged around when I was dancing in boxers/briefs.

Okay they do make full-back dance belts. You can just go to any dance store and ask for one. They are very comfortable and are just like briefs. The only reason you would wear a thong dance belt is if you were wearing tights and your teacher or choreographer didn't want to see lines. In that case you would wear Bloch. Bloch is a GREAT brand for dance belts. But what ever you do DON'T get capezio.
Is it weird I know so much about this (lol).

Capezio is where I got mine. I don't reccomend it either.
re: Dance Belts#8
Posted: 7/17/07 at 4:29pmYou might want to start getting used to them now. Once you're in a college musical theatre program they're usually mandatory.
re: Dance Belts#9
Posted: 7/18/07 at 5:37amI wear one to dance, and it took a few class but I got used to it. Like someone else said, if it's the thong back that bothers you, get a full butt belt. The only reason you'd need a thong back is to make it invisible under tights. If you're not wearing tights, wear the full back belt, or a jock strap, or compression shorts. I find a dance belt to be much more comfortable than flailing parts.

better safe than sorry, at least the cup on the dance belt is least likely to..expand. You can't stop boxer briefs from doing that!
Lol, this is from a production of Kiss Me, Kate we did.Our Bill Calhoun decided that he just wasn't going to wear one and opted for boxer briefs. So it's the three of us guys dancing during Tom, Dick, or Harry; but apparently no matter who our Lois pointed to, he was always going to be Dick...

Just wear it.
You may not think its possible, but at auditions and rehearsals it can become very clear who is wearing them and who isn't. It is usually quite noticeable and it makes the guilty offenders look like unprofessional idots. And no one wants to work with an idiot.
What have you got to loose... The chance of looking like someone who actually knows what they are doing?

Posted: 7/21/07 at 7:46pmHow important is it to actually wear these? What is the line where you grow out of productions where you just wear what ever and onese where you need to wear these?

Posted: 7/27/07 at 1:54pmthey are so important! I've known people to get very injured down there from lack of support. think about it: moving around all the time, jumping, and who knows what on stage can do a number to some unsupported anatomy. People I know have lost things in that area from not wearing proper support. If you think you're fine with boxer briefs, be warned, and be careful!

A few things on this:
"rapheal your gay arent you? every gay man i know doesnt mind them all the straight ones i know do"
You want to avoid saying anything like that. Especially since Musical Theatre is run by gay men, you don't want to risk someone to get the wrong impression of you. That attitude is definately a turn off, and you may think it's not a big deal, but that mind set may be influencing you as an auditioner more than you realize.
Also, at ANY school you audition in, it's important that you're not wearing cargo pants. You NEED to wear something that resembles what a dancer would wear. It doesn't necessarily have to be tights, but jazz pants or something tight fitting to show off your body.
Which goes along with, if anything else you should start wearing the dance belt to help you get into a "dancing mood." Just as any sports team wears their uniform, and an actor puts on his costume, you should wear that dance belt to make an easier shift from normal guy to DANCER.
And if you're a good dancer in any respect, you'll need that belt to avoid serious injury.

Posted: 8/5/07 at 4:30pmRunning is correct, you should really avoid talking of stereotypes like that to people you barely know. Dance belts were invented for a reason, they do what they are supposed to do and if you really intend to take this kind of stuff seriously you shouldn't even think about it. It's like when guys at my school whine about putting make-up on and how much they need. It's part of what you need to do, so shut up and do it.

Posted: 8/6/07 at 8:57pmWear a dance belt if your going to do a dance show. Wear one if your going to wear tight clothing. Trust me the audience can tell if your not wearing one. It does make the front look more presentable if you know what I mean. If your doing a show with no big dancing, Les Miz, then wear briefs not boxer briefs or trunks, they are the shorter version of boxer briefs. I suggest black for male undergarments. If something rips and red or green with some design start popping through, it's funny and distracting. What some guys where in my theater is black underarmer shorts. I've had some costumers want flesh colored dance belts. When you do get a dance belt make sure its the right size, I recommend Bloch dance belts because it does have a more comfortable thong back.
