Just heard this on Channel 7 news @ 4
He announces it on tonight's show. Wonder who will replace him. He had a good run. If Jay will move from LA, he would be an inspired choice.

Seeing that NBC is enjoying much higher ratings for the Tonight Show with Leno gone, I'm not sure how he would be an "inspired" choice.
From CBS's perspective, I'm unclear how replacing a 66-year-old host with a 63-year-old host would get them the young marketer they all want and that Fallon seems totally dialed in to.

Namo...the honest first thought that came to my mind was exactly what Roxy said!
I thought "wonder if Jay Leno will take over for David Letterman?"
It is a funny thought considering the Leno history at his previous position.

Now I see why I have Namo blocked
I looked at his response to this just to see if he had mellowed. Mr Bitter did not surprise me. Hey NAMO, I was only kidding but you cannot take a joke. One day you will stop taking nasty pills and you might actually be nice. Until than ......

If I was in my late 60's, extremely conservative, had absolutely no sense of humor, had skin so thin you could practically see through it and hated everyone who didn't agree completely with my every utterance, I'm sure I would think Jay Leno would be an inspired choice as well.
Edit: "Until than..." Isn't that a line from the new show If/Than?

The same goes for you Bob although I did not look at your response. Why bother. Thank you mods for ignore. Greatest invention since electricity.
Would love to see Ferguson on Late Night. This would be inspired. About 6 months ago I started watching him and I got hooked. Love his bits with Geoff the talking skeleton and Secretariat the horse. If he had a budget would his bit about his band The Shy Guys have to go? The question is would he move from LA to NY. The other problem I doubt CBS would make such an inspired choice. We shall see
I wonder if Moonves knew about this or was he shocked when he hears this?

You've been around since the invention of electricity so if anyone would know, it would be you, though I thought you once said Obamacare was the greatest invention since electricity. Maybe I got that backwards.

Craig I doubt would get it, I think they're likely to go with a younger host who can compete with the two Jimmys.
Chelsea Handler's leaving E! so she might be an option or possibly Conan as his contract also runs out in 2015. Another choice which wouldn't surprise me would be Neil Patrick Harris given his experience as a host on the Tonys, Emmys and guest stints with Kelly Ripa.

How effed up would CBS be to do Roxy's suggestion? In essence, give the gig to the guy responsible for his predecessor getting that previous gig in the first place. Okay, they are by no means that crazy. Moving on.
Suggestions:
Craig Ferguson- Obvious choice but the LA issues
Conan O'Brien- Another obvious choice. I think he really wants to return to network. TBS is not working out as a launchpad for anything besides maybe Pete Holmes' talk show. Also LA issues but him not in New York has kind of made a huge fulcrum of his show feel like it has a missing piece.
Maya Rudolph- She has something in the works with NBC, yadda yadda yadda. I want her to actually succeed.
Zach Galifianakis- Were CBS ever trying to skew young, it would probably happen during late night. Galifianakis' whole shtick, which oddly feels like if Letterman in the 80s were doing Steve Allen, is something that I always wanted to see in the format. And if Between Two Ferns with Obama was any indication, he has more cache in that position of a host than people thought. Plus he has a 'he's one of us' air that works with celebrities.
Louis CK- Because let's really make Season 3 of Louie a reality.

Posted: 4/3/14 at 6:26pmFerguson and Galifianakis wouldn't work for the same reason Conan had trouble, too quirky. It works at 12:30 with a smaller and more hard core fan base but at 11:30 the appeal might not be broad enough though it might be time for Conan to get another shot. He's wasting away on TBS, he is enormously talented and he's a better fit as an alternative to Kimmel and Fallon than he was against Letterman. There's a reason most successful late night talk show hosts have a standup comedy background so if none of these are selected, look for someone with that background. Longshot, but you heard it here first... Drew Carey.

Posted: 4/3/14 at 6:33pmConan's contract with TBS ends in November 2015 and I imagine CBS would want to launch the new Late Show in September 2015 unless of course, they buy out the last three months of his contract.

It's true about Galifianakis being too quirky. He would be the perfect host for a show after the main event but he is much too famous to do that now.
Carey would make sense. He did fill-ins for Letterman before IIRC.
I do wonder how involved Letterman's company, Worldwide Pants is involved in this. They do Ferguson's show too.
I'll also put it out there: Jon Stewart. Letterman pretty much helped him get back into a hosting ring years ago after Stewart's show on MTV failed and they're clearly tight. I also think Stewart is exhausted at this point in doing TDS for the last few years. He might just take a gig that is straight up hosting.
It should be noted Letterman had his contract through 2015. Unless Moonves is unaware about contracts, he is no way shocked by this.

Posted: 4/3/14 at 6:37pmA January 2016 launch would be just as effective and I think Letterman's contract runs through the end of 2015 though I could be wrong. If Conan is the guy they want, they'll figure out the logistics.

CBS has the Superbowl in 2016 so they could launch it maybe the night after the Superbowl but that seems like a long time although it would give CBS plenty of time to find a new host.

Weren't they just stringing Louis along to sign Seinfeld, though?! Been a while since I saw it, but I recall that being the case.
