According to Nikki Finke, as in this could go either way-- leaning toward mere rumor, Stephen Colbert is being heavily considered.
The NY vs LA thing could be a factor.

Posted: 4/3/14 at 9:24pmIt is a bigger theater. When it was converted the top part of the balcony was walled off. Originally Jackie Gleason and Ed Sullivan came from there. I honestly never thought of putting it back into use as a Broadway house. It could definitely work.

Posted: 4/3/14 at 9:45pmWould have thought CBS would want to keep the Ed Sullivan Theatre even if The Late Show were to move to Los Angeles. I imagine they'd get a lot of money for it if they ever did sell it.

They would have a large hole in their profits if nothing replaced it. Doubt Conan is an option as he damaged goods from NBC and doubt he setting the world on fire @ TBS
On the other hand, they may feel they cannot take on Fallon. They are in a quandary. Interesting to see how it plays out.

I saw one report, I can't find it now, that said that not only would Ferguson not be a likely replacement for Letterman he apparently is on record as saying he doesn't want it. He's perfectly happy at 12:30 by all reports.
Colbert would be interesting, but in a negative way: there's no way he could get away with what makes him so brilliant if he were on CBS, and losing the character "Stephen Colbert" on CC to gain regular Stephen Colbert on CBS would be a huge loss to my eyes.
Drew Carey would be a safe, boring pick. CBS is known for safe and boring, though. That's kind of why I think what Ferguson has done (under the secure umbrella of Letterman's production company) by undoing and redoing the talk show format is so wonderful (and so likely not to succeed at 11:30 like Fallon clearly was determined to succeed.)
There's gonna be a lot of pressure, especially after the Seth Meyers pick at Late Night, to have a non-white, non-male host. Late night is rather homogenous...

I don't think there will be any pressure of the kind. And if there were, the network wouldn't care.
However, I would LOVE to see Aisha Tyler do an 11:30 show from LA.

I don't think Amy Poehler would wish to break her very, very deep ties with NBC. Or with Lorne Michaels, who is pretty much ruling late night right now.
I think Letterman realized that with Fallon's stellar ratings and Broadway Video having 3 Late Night venues for celebrities to be able to promote their projects, he was going to have a hard time for booking guests, as would any late night talk show out of NYC.

Posted: 4/4/14 at 3:42am^ Letterman is an icon. Over 30+ years, he has made too many friends and too many people owe him for helping their careers. There is still considerable cache in being on Letterman. He would never, ever have a problem getting guests. That's not it at all. It's all about the ratings. Fallon is the shiny new thing and has not only maintained Leno's lead but added to it (though we'll see if that holds once his newness wears off). Kimmel is the hip choice, his audience is growing and he has almost caught Letterman for 2nd place. Letterman's core fan base has gotten older and is less and less likely to stay up late to watch at 12:30 than they were in years past. With Fallon's fast start, it became clear to Letterman that he was not going to be able to retake the top spot now that Leno was gone and as he turns 67 next week hanging on into his 70's and potentially falling to 3rd place in the ratings didn't have much of an appeal for him. I don't think it's a coincidence that Letterman's inspiration Johnny Carson retired just before turning 67 and didn't hang on too long. Give Letterman credit for being pragmatic enough and having enough class to recognize the demographics of late night are changing and it was time for him to go.

With a strong and talented writing staff, I believe Neil Patrick Harris could be a fine choice and would attract the younger demographic. He also has the ties to CBS and could be looking for a new gig now that HIMYM is done. They could even do it from Los Angeles. Yes, I realize it's another white man but at least he's not straight!
"Fallon is the shiny new thing and has not only maintained Leno's lead but added to it (though we'll see if that holds once his newness wears off)."
Fallon is not the shiny new thing. Fallon is Fallon. He is doing nothing different at 11:30 than he was doing at 12:30. It's just on a more visible platform. There is no "newness" that will wear off. People genuinely love him because he is good at what he does and, most importantly, the younger demographic adores his style. That is not going to change or suddenly vanish.

I saw a night of women's comedy in Montreal a number of years ago and she was the host and I was thinking, "Well, she's a pretty model and probably will charmingly introduce people," but oh no. She was hilarious. Did a short set and then continued to be funny all night. And there were tons of talented women on that stage.
She'd be really good.

Did you get her book "Self-Inflicted Wounds". She is a pretty good story-teller. I had no idea she got her start in stand-up. I originally only knew her from her TV stuff, but there is a lot more to her.
And, her podcast is pretty entertaining and diverse. Everything from chefs, to comics, to gamers to actors to musicians. It is great for an afternoon of walking/working out.
