"I have a problem with people who don't care very much about animal welfare."
I have a problem with hypocrites who are worried about 20 horses when there are millions of dogs mistreated in the city every day.

Whoa, do you pay attention to yourself?
1. 20 horses? I wish it were only 20. And guess what? EVen if it were ONE horse, that's one too many.
2. Guess what - it's possible to be concerned with more than one thing at a time. We can be concerned with the plight of horses AND dogs. yes, it's possible!

For those of you who are concerned about the fate of the unemployed horses, I encourage you to give lavishly to Mylestone Equine Rescue--a wonderful farm in Phillipsburg, NJ, where abused, abandoned, and homeless horses are given a place to heal and, often, find new homes. Those that do not find new homes live out their lives in a safe and wonderful environment.
Susankelly Thompson is the wonderful, dynamic, and endlessly energetic woman who created Mylestone, and she, her husband and her kids have devoted their lives to this mission.
You can adopt a horse, volunteer at the farm or just donate funds and/or supplies. I have been mucking out stalls at Mylestone 3 or 4 times a year for 10 years and seeing the horses heal, grow strong and thrive is more beautiful and inspiring than I can describe.

If you had EVER posted on here in favor of better treatment for dogs, you might have more credibility on this issue.
Instead, it just seems like you are using the dogs and horses to begin a new four-year-long campaign against another liberal politician.

I categorically reject the notion that I have to choose between the welfare of carriage horses and the welfare of companion animals.
Suggesting that I am abandoning puppies and kittens to neglect because I insist that the abuse of carriage horses must end may be a nifty technique for the High School debate team, but in real life we sometimes need to follow up on multiple issues of concern.
ETA: Sorry, Jane, I was so busy saying it in 100 words that I didn't see you had said it in 10!

And where is your proof that there are millions of dogs mistreated? And do you work with any animal welfare groups or volunteer with an animal rescue group? If your answer is no to both, then what are you doing to help these "millions" of dogs? If your answer is nothing, then I wouldn't talk about other people being hypocrites.
And yes, I am involved with an animal rescue group around where I live. I see all sorts of things.
And this was to Goth, not anyone else who posted in between that nonsense.

oh don't be silly Addison. You're much more articulate than I. I enjoy reading your posts!

Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters for starters, who every year are involved in an event called Broadway Barks because they recognize that the mistreatment of dogs and cats is far worse than that of horses.

There are tons of celebrities who have spoken out against the horse carriage industry as well. This board was about the horse drawn carriage industry. We get it, you're a dog lover, I can't stand them personally. But this is about the victory against the terrible industry and the workers who abuse them. This is a good thing, and I think most New Yorkers agree.

Broadway Barks is a cat-and-dog adoption event. Horses are not involved.
If Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore were to read that post, they would be telling you that you were full of horse-drawn horse poop.

"I'm sure Kommandant de Blasio is only banning this because he doesn't want the peasants to think more highly of themselves than they ought to."
You slipped and let your real agenda show. You have to be more careful next time. You're just using the horses to support one of what we can assume will be many anti-de Blasio rants to come. Just using those horses to push your own agenda. Now THAT'S animal abuse.

Sadly, yes, it looks like it's true about the horses being put down.

It's also a poorly-written article full of conjecture and sloppy writing. My favourite sentence:
"Since 2008, there have been a growing number of neglected, abused and starving horses — leading ranchers, like Charles Graham of New Mexico (pictured), around the country to support *human* horse slaughter." (asterisks added)

Wrong. That is NOT the reason for Broadway Barks.
You keep dropping names of celebrities to make your argument. It doesn't work.
Face it Goth, you lost this one big time. What else is new?

Whether you are for or against the carriage trade, let's look at the bigger picture.
de Blasio is starting a new term as mayor and there's a lot of talk about a new era in New York City.
He could talk about how he will help poor families. He could talk about how he's going to do something for the homeless. He could talk about helping the elderly.
But what is his main focus on his first day in office? To put down a few horses from an industry that has been running since 1857.
This sets the wrong tone and immediately puts him as out of touch with really what's important for the city.

from the NYDN article linked by the OP of this thread:
"We are going to get rid of the horse carriages. Period,” de Blasio said in response to a question at his press conference announcing his schools chancellor pick Monday."
Someone asked the Mayor-elect a question, and he answered it--this is the sort of give-and-take that is the sine qua non of the Press Conference, but only someone willfully trying to find a way to object to something--ANYTHING--about Mayor deBlasio would suggest that he has "chosen" to make this "the first act" of his mayoralty.
Let me hasten to add, however, that I would NOT object to it if Mayor deBlasio HAD chosen to make this his first, official act. It is very much in keeping with the values that attracted so many voters to his campaign--showing a concern for those without a voice, oppressed and neglected by the rapacious Plutocrats who seem to have been the primary focus of Mayor Bloomberg's concern.

He hasn't even taken office yet. That happens TOMORROW. He made a statement about finally getting rid of an inhumane practice. How does that qualify as his "main focus"?
Why don't you wait and see what he actually talks about on his first day in office, before you make more inane statements?
Oh...wait, it won't make any difference what he actually talks about. He's a Democrat...and a liberal. Nothing he says...will make you happy. Right??

From an animal-rights activist in one of the threads on this on FB:
I'm a vegan & animal rights protester & I think this is nothing more than a feel-good moment for people who would do a lot better to address the 99.99% of workhorses in the world whose lives are total ****.
I wish the new mayor had announced new living and working conditions for the horses and confined their routes to Central Park. And then used the new rules as a teaching moment for the entire nation as to the care and treatment of large animals.
