Charles Gibson, who has served as anchor of "World News" since May of 2006, announced this morning that he will step down from the post at the end of this year and retire from full-time employment at ABC News.
"Good Morning America" anchor Diane Sawyer, 63, will serve as the next "World News" anchor, beginning in January.
"It has not been an easy decision to make," Gibson, 66, said in an e-mail to the "World News" staff. "This has been my professional home for almost 35 years. And I love this news department, and all who work in it, to the depths of my soul."

It will be strange to see yet another face behind the desk that will always belong to Peter Jennings. I thought Charlie Gibson did a wonderful job, and I am interested in seeing how Sawyer does. I have never found her to be quite as professional as others (like Jennings and Gibson), but that might just be her "morning news" personality. I wish her the best of luck with the position and hope to see Gibson on many special assignments.

David walked into the valley
With a stone clutched in his hand
He was only a boy
But he knew someone must take a stand
There will always be a valley
Always mountains one must scale
There will always be perilous waters
Which someone must sail
