I went to my senior prom with a lovely girl named Janice. She was such a dear close friend, and I was... SO not "out" yet!
We had a terrific evening together, and it's something I will cherish for the rest of my life. A perfect evening.
But when people mention "proms" I always have a twinge of sadness, and unfortunately, horror...
...about eight years after our senior prom, I was shocked and sickened to learn that Janice had been brutally murdered by a former (deeply disturbed) boyfriend of hers. He's now in jail for life. I hadn't talked with her in years, and I was living in Los Angeles at the time. It took me a VERY long time to come to grips with what had happened. I actually sank into a deep depression for months. It was so hard for me to process. It still is.
So, I have an understandably "strange" reaction when people talk about their senior proms. To all of you who went... I hope you enjoyed yours... to those who didn't... that's equally fine too. The memories of my own prom experience are caught in this unfortunately unique world that I hope to God NONE of you will ever share with me.
