Not to belabor (because we never do that here on bww) but I never had a big problem with Nancy's disposition. She comes off like many New Englanders do. Aloof, which I've been accused of myself. I also always thought her huge teeth gave her a sneer she couldnt control. The girl was unable to keep her mouth closed!
Also, most skating outfits are corny, but her olympic outfit by Vera Wang was gorgeous.

Posted: 1/26/10 at 10:22amTo keep the belaboring going- I always thought her New England aloofness came off as snobbery and I don't think the general public goes for that. Especially when middle America probably identified more with Tonya. I must be part middle America, because I rarely side with the snobs.

"Nancy did deserve that gold medal over Oksana...but that's like saying Crash didnt deserve the oscar."
I remember being thrilled when Oksana won! I thought she skated like a dream and I loved her routine (her costume, on the other hand...) I was a huge fan of Baiul and Viktor Petrenko that winter. Nancy was graceful and talented, but I could never warm up to her.

I think the general public started souring on her at the Olympics during the medal ceremony. That's when she made some snide remark about Oksana while waiting for the awards and the cameras overheard it. There was a long delay and Nancy blamed it on Oksana, when in fact the Olympic committee was having a problem finding the right Russian anthem. Then that was followed by her corny remark, and all of a sudden the public started seeing an unpleasant side.
A person can call something corny, in a very lighthearted funny way where everyone laughs. But her corny remark was in a disgusted "I'm above this" sort of *rolling eyes* way. At least, that's the way I took it.
And then there's the aspect of her having an affair with her married manager, whom she later married. But, who's keeping track... LOL

The Kerrigans weren't wealthy. Cosmetic dentistry, other than orthodontia, was most likely beyond the means of a family paying so much into the competitive ice skating industry. And although I too found Tonya's trashery to be eminently watchable, don't forget she was a cheating criminal.
I saw Brett Butler do a stand up set about a year after Tonyagate, and she said, "Ya'll, she wasn't supposed to amount to anything, her mama named her 'Tonya.'"

Blue - I'm in the camp where I was glad that Oksana won too, LOL. Talk about dredging up an old dabate.
Nancy did skate cleanly and Oksana had more mistakes. But there was a musicality and interpretation that I found engaging, so I would have tipped it in her favor.

See now, I didn't even think the two were in the same league skating-wise. Sure, Nancy was graceful but that's where it stops for me. All she did was skate around in a graceful circle, in a graceful costume, and try a few non spectacular jumps. Her claim to fame was to hold on to her leg for a spiral. All the other skaters could do it without holding on.
Oksana was stunning ballet on ice, I thought. She had gorgeous choreography as well as doing her jumps. I think she stole the hearts of most people who watched her. And although the back stories shouldn't count, hers was touching and much more effective than the Kerrigan's.

I found no musicality in Oksana's performance. It was a childish perf. to me and had many mistakes. She won by throwing in a triple at the end to make up for a missed one and it was odd and not graceful at all, but she did it and got credit for it...she won...and that was her best performance ever. She never got any better, only drunker.
I actually liked Nancy's spiral, even though she used her arm. Several skaters use their arm, including Slutskaya (who I loved as a character, but hated as a skater). I'd rather have someone do a good spiral by holding their leg, than a bad spiral without...but noone does a spiral like Michelle, Sasha or our other trashy skater...Nicole Bobek.

Posted: 1/26/10 at 12:34pmI was just thinking, wasn't Oksana Baiul arrested for drunk driving, and she was underage at the time? I have to say, I was honestly surprise when I looked at recent pictures of her. For someone who's going to be 33 this year, I thought she looked older.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that triple (which she double-footed and should've counted for a deduction) helped her tie with Kerrigan. Thus, the need for a tie-breaker. But it was the artistic merit that won Baiul the gold 'cause the Olympic judges opted to go that route to decide the eventual winner. Had they gone with technical (like they'd done in the past) Kerrigan would've won. As it were, Baiul edged her out by 0.1 points in artistic.
BTW: I concur, Nancy's costumes were anything but corny.

Posted: 1/26/10 at 12:43pmYou are correct Stagemanager...I remember feeling like any artistic merit in Oksana's program was ruined by going awkwardly off her program by adding in that jump.

We do think alike, Dottie.
Post Olympics, I much preferred Nancy's personality to Oksana's. They both went professional and Oksana couldnt live up to her gold medal...ever. She made excuses and was rude to every interviewer...often ignoring them and walking out if they dared to wonder why she couldnt land a double jump anymore.

Actually, she skated to Swan Lake for her short program...and a medley of showtunes for her long.
