The sport is based and judged on jumps, scored on jumps, jumps jumps and when I read posts here everyone mentions the jumps and maybe occasionally something else. What I infer from all that is that jumps are it.

You implied that that was the way I felt...and there was no reason to conclude that. Kwan is the greatest skater ever and her jumps were not her strong suit...she was an artist.
Still insulting.
And yes...the jumps are important. To negate them is ridiculous. Those girls might as well be out there in their socks on a kitchen floor otherwise.

Did Hubert ACTUALLY skate to a symphonic Queen medley?? That's f*cking awesome.
I can still remember exactly where I was when I watched that performance.
AND she skated last!!!

"I never will appreciate the skating "talent" of Nancy-I don't see it!"
LOL, neither do I. She was a very good skater, but imo I found her style to be too mechanical. Even when doing the "dance" components, I got the feeling she was doing the movements because they were choreographed (versus her adding her own interpretation to the choreography), and it actually looked awkward to me. I have to say that of all the years that I have been watching skating (since Peggy Fleming and Janet Lynn), she has imo been one of the most stiff skaters I have ever seen at that level. I would not describe her as a lyrical performer. But everyone sees something different, so no sense arguing. I may have mentoned earlier that I would not have been unhappy if she had gotten the gold medal, because she did skate well. It's just that as Dick Button once said about great skaters, "do they elevate the sport?", and I never felt that she did.
It's hard to defend Oskana, LOL, because she never lived up to her potential and she became a train wreck off the ice. But she did have a natural dance ability that I appreciated.
Michelle - What a heartbreaker, I'm so sorry she's not a member of the gold medal club.

Ok, I am totally doing the Eliza-Crosses-the-Frozen-River choreography from the King and I when I get home tonight.

"But jumping is what...ya know...makes it a sport."
I see it a different way. I see it as skating is the sport. Ya know, like speed skating doesn't involve jumps and it's a sport.

But...it's the jumping that makes is different from speed skating.
Kinda like the half-pipe is the flashier cousin to snowboardcross.

doodle please. When speaking in generalizations, I was not singling you out. Generally, jumping is all important and I was not directing it to you,

I think there's much too much importance on the jumping. Jumps are things that can be learned and with enough practice, a skater can do them. the style and grace that I think is more important cannot be learned. It's a talent. I'll always appreciate that more than technical ability,

Then you must LOVE ice dancing!!!
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I actually agree that the concept of 'whoever lands the quad wins the gold' is ridiculous. But jumps are part of the whole package. And whoever puts all the elements together the best is who I'll root for.

UM, I don't watch ice dancing. That was Very Insulting, LOL!
And I'll also root for the one who puts all the elements together the best.

You are kidding me, right Jane? Reread the thread. Your implication was that
anyone who didn't agree with you about Baiul didn't appreciate artistry, which is
insulting. Some of us didn't think she was that artistic...and. Hold on to your hat,
that Kerrigan was.
And Matty and Danmag. I wanna see your lutzes on YouTube!!

See now, I didn't even think the two were in the same league skating-wise. Sure, Nancy was graceful but that's where it stops for me. All she did was skate around in a graceful circle, in a graceful costume, and try a few non spectacular jumps. Her claim to fame was to hold on to her leg for a spiral. All the other skaters could do it without holding on.
Oksana was stunning ballet on ice, I thought. She had gorgeous choreography as well as doing her jumps. I think she stole the hearts of most people who watched her. And although the back stories shouldn't count, hers was touching and much more effective than the Kerrigan's.
Doodle, here's the post. IT'S AN OPINION.I'm careful to write "I think" when I state an opinion. If you again feel insulted, then go right ahead.

"LOL Doodle! I STILL love figure skating on my kitchen floor!!"
My sibs and I would put on our own Olympics. There were only two events (figure skating and speed skating) and we all competed in each one, socks and all. Mom was the judge. She'd watch while she graded papers.
One time, after we'd been awarded our homemade construction paper medals, we started bowing/waving to each side of the "rink" (really, the bedroom hardwood floor) like they do in figure skating. We began facing mom and worked our way clockwise, but when we got back to her she was gone. We went looking for her and asked why she'd left, and she said matter-of-factly, "You already waved to me." So like fools we had stood there waving at blank walls. Hahahaha

SM2, for some reason that story painted a very vivid picture and I couldn't stop laughing.
When we were kids we created our own ice rink by taking the water hose and freezing our back patio (8 x 10). I remember one time we were out there skating and some neighborhood kids asked my sister who she was, and she said matter of factly, "I'm Peggy Fleming". Don't know if she remembers that, but I certainly do. And it was really special if our parents let us go skating at night by turning on the back light to our "skating rink"!

Posted: 1/26/10 at 6:21pmOh, I desperately wanted to be Peggy Flemming back in the day...I used to ice skate on a frozen pond in my neighborhood early in the morning because I thought I was training for the Olympics. I fell through the ice one time up to my waist. Scared me to death!!! And dashed my Olympic dreams.

I"m LMAO at the mental picture of a little danmag up to her waist in icy water. Is that wrong?
I wanted to be Dorothy Hamil. Is that spelled wrong, it looks wrong. But I didn't want her haircut. I thought it was sorta dorky.
