re: Do you ever get jealous of the professional successes of others?

Well, none of my friends are professionals, but I do get extremely jealous of the best and most successful performers that I know just because of their talent and dedication and the amount of time and money that they can afford to spend on performing. Theatre's important to me, but I know I'll never be professional-quality.

However, I don't feel like it damages my self-worth. The best performers I know devote so much time to theatre that they can't do anything else. Even more important to theatre for me is writing, especially writing theatre reviews for Cappies, and that's something I can do that the actors and singers I know can't.

I've learned to be proud of my friends, and to channel all of that into inspiration. Jealous and negative energy is what gets you nowhere and what makes you hard to cast. Why waste my time being jealous of someone I know, when I can look at their performance like a learning experience and congratulate them on a job well done, and be genuine about it. Straight up!!!

I don't really get jealous of my friends, because you can learn from them. I feel like that kind of jealousy goes away with maturity...

re: Do you ever get jealous of the professional successes of others?

As others have said, I find that I'm always really happy for my friends successes instead of jealous. But when I do feel a sting of envy, I use it to make myself more motivated to work harder and become better.
"You have two kinds of shows on Broadway – revivals and the same kind of musicals over and over again, all spectacles. You get your tickets for The Lion King a year in advance, and essentially a family... pass on to their children the idea that that's what the theater is – a spectacular musical you see once a year, a stage version of a movie. It has nothing to do with theater at all. It has to do with seeing what is familiar.... I don't think the theatre will die per se, but it's never going to be what it was.... It's a tourist attraction." Stephen Sondheim

Considering the fact that I'm usually the main one giving the compliments to my fellow cast members- no, I don't really feel jealous. That usually rears its ugly head earlier, when the cast list goes up. But that's only for a brief period of time, fortunately.

Oh gosh, Schmuerg- the Cappies! Always entertaining.
