Doctor Who 7.2

I am happy to wait till Sunday - it's never anyone I guess at.
I adore Ben Whishaw, great actor, gorgeous to look at, very shy and humble and such kissable lips!!! Sorry where was I?
Probably a joke but Chris O'Dowd just tweeted
"has anyone seen my scarf? #WinkWink"
And Freddie Fox has just seen his betting odds shorten if that means anything to anyone.

I'm going to have to watch the last episode again--does everybody else think they understand who/what Jenna *really* is? Or are you-all still feeling your way through hints and clues and allusions, etc.?
I'm still completely lost, and I'm interested to see how the change in Doctor changes that arc. Eleven had such a complex, fore-shadowy, multi-dimensional, timey-wimey history with her. Twelve will have all his memories, of course, but it will be a challenge for both the writers and the actor to convince me that this deeply inter-twined connection hasn't been broken by the change in Doctors.

Jenna Coleman is staying for series 8.
I am definitely in the camp of wanting an older doctor, though I am a huge Smith fan (I like him significantly more than Tennant in every way, and do not see more than the standard "character" traits shared between them. The energy and mania of the character are portrayed in almost entirely different ways, as are the reactions to the sadness of loss- 10 flys off around the universe to prop himself up and marry Queen Bess. 11 locks himself in the TARDIS in Victorian London. That difference is the essence of why I prefer 11.)
I agree though that the writing of season 7.2 in particular was not strong, and many of the season plots of the entire Moffat era have been... lacking. (Though it contains several of my all time favorite episodes.)
I am quite excited for the announcement on Sunday.
(This is definitely a conversation I am excited to have now that I have "returned" to BWW. :) )

Addison, it was kinda like Rose spreading the words "Bad Wolf". She had to put herself in these different times in history and The Doctor's life (even going back to Hartnell).
That's all I got, buddy

Posted: 8/2/13 at 4:17pmI hope that the change for 12 and Clara is that they actually write her any semblance of an actual personality.

Wyn--you may think that is meager, but it's more than I managed to retain. I watched the last ep at a hectic moment in my life, and all I remember is the yelling.
I'm going to watch again this evening.
Smartpenguin--Welcome back. And I agree--Coleman seems like a bright and likable actor, but she is playing Clara as having only one speed--perky.

I really hope it isn't Peter Capaldi. Not because I have anything against him, or even that he had a one-episode guest appearance in Season 4's "The Fires of Pompeii", but that he was the main (human) villain in Torchwood: Children of Earth. In my opinion, that's too big of an existing role in the Who-niverse to be overlooked.
I'm personally hoping for someone less known. Honestly, I don't care whether the new Doctor is male or female, white or not, or anything else as long as they've got an interesting and fresh take on the character and have strong chemistry with Jenna. I admit I wouldn't mind if Alexander Vlahos (an actor from Merlin) got the role, but he's probably too young and too unknown. In any case, should be interesting to see!

I think I'm gonna miss Matt's hair most of all...

BTW, Wynnie--I didn't meant to ignore your question. That IS what I think about Rory Kinnear.
He doesn't have the Hot Bald Guy vibe of Statham or Chiklis or Agassi--he's clinging to those few wisps of hair.
How can we believe in a Doctor who hasn't even got the nerve to shave his head?

I know nothing about Rory's work, but I know he was a frontrunner in some websites' polls.
Eccleston was kinda buzzed, but we had two amazing-haired Doctors in a row. Rose even said Ten had "great hair" in a way that made the world nod along with her.
I was talking to a friend about my "why can't James Callis do it?" complaint, and he brought up that The Doctor cannot be shorter than his companions. I wonder why that is. That must just be a New-Who thing, but I don't see why not.

Posted: 8/3/13 at 10:18pmRory Kinnear was great in THE HOLLOW CROWN, playing young Bolingbroke opposite Ben Whishaw's King in RICHARD II. I've never seen him on stage but he's been very acclaimed from the reviews I recall.

I believe that William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Sylvester McCoy and perhaps even Jon Pertwee would call your friend an idiot.

And the new Doctor is.....
Peter Capaldi

He's long been on my list of under-appreciated actors--I've liked him since 'Dangerous Liasons' and 'Vicar of Dibley'.
I guess I can move him off that list now.
I think he's a good fit for the role--certainly he's in keeping with the 'feel' of all the Nu-Who Doctors.
After all these years, perhaps it's unrealistic to restrict candidates to performers who have never appeared in the Who-niverse. I confess I don't remember him from the 'Fires of Pompeii'--was he recognizable or did he play a Lizard? I will have to watch that ep this evening...
The Doctor is Dead; long live the Doctor!

Posted: 8/4/13 at 4:28pmI think what's great about this casting is I can see it working so well with Clara. If Peter was cast when Amy was still there, it would not have worked.

Wynbush, why do you think he wouldn't have worked if Amy was still there?
I've seen some complaints on Anglophenia saying he's "too old." *rolleyes* Personally I'm intrigued and look forward to seeing what he'll do with the role. Liked him in the Pompeii episode, and he was really good in Torchwood Children of EArth.

I'm supposing that he could maybe be a scholarly, stately Doctor like Pertwee kinda was. With Amy's type of forward, overt energy, it would have been an odd juxtaposition, I think.
Peter's Doctor could go a different route, of course, but either way, I think he and Clara will be great partners.
But what will he wear?!?

I love the choice. He is a wonderfully eclectic actor, his energy can very easily be turned on a dime and with full force. Sounds just like a perfect Doctor to me. Also, as he's clearly shown with Armando Iannucci, he's an actor writers can love writing for. Hopefully he brings out the best in Moffat.
Also, now there will always be the hanging tension that the 12th Doctor may just let loose a stream of unending profanity at any time...
